In the beginning of Red Mars, our heroes are (rightly) afraid of radiation from being on the surface. By the time we get to Blue Mars, they’re prancing around the surface buck naked. At no time in the intervening pages has Mars magically developed a magnetic field. WTF, KSR? Make it make sense.

Isaac Asimov’s first Lucky Starr juvie featuring John “Bigman” Jones, the plucky Martian, came out in 1952. J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter, appeared in DC Comics in 1955. In the 1990s Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars series features myths about Big Man, a kind of Paul Bunyan figure. Coincidence?

my 75yo mother told me last night that she’s planning to delete Instagram and Facebook because she’s sick of not being able to tell what’s AI and what’s not, and I genuinely don’t think tech companies have reckoned with this kind of move as an actual possibility

On the face of it, the Venezuelan regime has played Trump for a sucker. The details are murky but it appears that now-acting president Rodriguez convinced Rubio that she would accept a US take-over and that the US was given the location of Maduro (and his wife).

The Epstein Files Transparency Act is a law, passed by Congress on November 19 with an overwhelming vote. Complying with it was not optional. The Department of Justice did not comply. I want to make sure this is very clear.

Mamdani rescinded every executive order issued by Eric Adams after Adams's indictment, but still the "New York Times" is focusing exclusively on two of those orders that had to do with Israel. There is someone singling out Israel here. And it isn't Zohran Mamdani.
"New York Times" headline: "Inside Mamdani’s Decision to Revoke Executive Orders That Backed Israel
Mr. Mamdani, a staunch critic of Israel and its treatment of Palestinians, knew he would not extend the orders, but he had to decide how and when he would rescind them."

Every major free speech org has said the IHRA definition suppresses constitutionally protected speech. Every major human rights group has said it suppresses legitimate advocacy. The scandal is that Adams adopted the definition, not that Mamdani rejected it. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/04/n...

Although, if a lot of people believe the false etymology as I did, that’s still a reason not to use the phrase, as far as I’m concerned. See also, “calling a spade a spade“.

I’m reasonably sure that Robert Redford battered and deep fried would look better than that, even three and a half months dead. And even 3 1/2 months dead he’s still twice the man Trump ever was or will be. But I see where you’re coming from.

Tho in my experience the back of spoon whacking technique calls for (a) a whole tree full of pomegranates (because you’re going to lose more than if you carefully disassemble the fruit) and (b) an apron (or red clothing). It’s the most cathartic way to prep a fruit EVAR though.

The wave of skeets about the FOXification of CBS are a little bemusing to me. I mean, yeah, it’s awful. But all you ppl who are professing shock — are you actually shocked? Because my level of shock would be accurately represented by the old Casablanca clip. This was both predictable, and predicted.

It feels like it’s a case of capitalism ruins everything and a collective action problem for universities to stop doing behaviors they by and large know are harmful or at least problematic.

We’re a bit too far along the process to take your advice but thanks. Their SAT (and GPA) is very respectable, my ire is more a case of how I can see how someone with the same potential but without the same economic advantages is massively disadvantaged.

I have a senior in high school who’s going through the college application process and I have been developing oPiNiOnS about the SAT (in a nutshell, it sure feels like a scam, though so does the entire process). It’s nice to have some proper studies to inform my attitude.

“Are only correlated” in the sense of “have been shown not to correlate with years beyond the first” or “have not been studied in years beyond the first”? (It doesn’t help that the “learn more” link in the two paragraph College Board summary is 404.)
