WABE Ups Power, Adds Stereo
By JEAN THWAITE
Atlanta's public radio station WABE-FM (90.1) will increase its power from 10,000 watts monaural to 30,000 watts stereo on Saturday. The station, licensed to The Atlanta Board of Education is in its 25th year and the only member of the National Public Radio network in Georgia. It also is the only source of classical music in Atlanta during the evening hours. In addition to stereophonic sound, the station is increasing the number of local programs after sundown. "Atlanta Music Scene" will focus on professional and non-professional concerts and recitals in the metro area and will be broadcast each Thursday at 9:30 p.m.

A Tale of Two City Documentaries: Apparently, the same week the "Stop Cop City" documentary had its Atlanta premiere at the Plaza Theatre, a film called "The Atlanta Story" screened at Georgia Public Broadcasting with the involvement of several former mayors.

Instagram post: cityofatlantaga • Here are some highlights from the special screening of The Atlanta Story.
Chief of Staff Courtney English joined Ambassador Andrew Young, director and co-creator CB Hackworth, and former Mayors Shirley Franklin, Bill Campbell and Kasim Reed for an evening reflecting on the people, leadership and defining moments that helped shape Atlanta.
The screening and conversation brought generations of Atlanta leadership together to reflect on our city's history and the work that continues to shape its next chapter.

Alt-weekly legend John Sugg has died. I don't know if he was actually fearless, but I do know he did not hesitate to publish what he knew was true even if it annoyed people. He told the truth and treated the people around him with kindness and care. www.facebook.com/laila.alaria...

Megaton Communion is a good band if you wanna hit the Sabbath spot or drive across Death Valley at night with no headlights. A fine album via the label of ATL's Tommy Stewart of the legendary Hallow's Eve. 🤘

Had a great time today at ATL's Criminal Records meeting and goofing around with legendary artist Derek Riggs, creator of Iron Maiden's pal Eddie & their iconic album covers. Brought home an Eddie of my very own -- is it ok to feed him after midnight? He's still signing, far as I know. Go buy art! 🤘

A pleasure to see the inimitable Nicko McBrain fill our ears, our hearts, and the swear jar tonight in Atlanta with his Iron Maiden tribute band Titanium Tart, in fabulous veggie PJs and flip-flops. Plus, a fierce opening from ATL's own Paladin. 🤘

RIP to an absolute punk legend. I only saw Dead Boys once, but they blew the door off the club. Cheetah's playing was ferocious throughout the show—except for those moments when Stiv pogoed over his cord and unplugged the guitar! Safe travels, Cheetah.

Bari Weiss's The Free Press has covered it (in a pro-Israel, anti-Communist way) but CBS News has not. Here in Atlanta, the hometown of Cox Enterprises, it’s completely absent, circulating almost like samizdat via Instagram stories and, likely, group chats.

Good night my friends. Every year DragonCon reminds me that the world can be better - can be a place of people celebrating the things they love and the people they love. So thank you, for restoring a little bit of my hope for the future. I love you so very much.

Dragon Con badge pickup should move 100% indoors anyhow, but something is going really wrong this year. People stuck for hours in heat/sun, no water, no info, in driveways, while lots of hotel space unused. Attendance is back to huge. Tomorrow and Saturday could be really scary. #DragonCon2026

As an old hesher, a fave Dolly Parton memory: She initially declined Rock n Roll Hall of Fame nomination, feeling she hadn't earned it (!), then recorded an entire rock album to pay her dues; meanwhile sang 'Jolene' with, among others, the Metal God.
