When the civil war comes, all the competent soldiers will be on the rebel side.

Actually, it was a revelation to read George Melly’s autobiographies and realize quite how rock and roll Trad was.

Just “The 1950s”, I think. Don’t forget, for a while there the most credible thing around was Trad Jazz.

Alma Cogan. Cheesiest of cheese, but befriended The Beatles and did a terrific set of Beatles covers before she died.

Yes, but they have to have it with other Tories.

Although competing bids from whom? I don’t think they make Aibos any more. (Does feel like a Murderbot novella waiting to happen)

It's probably not entirely irrelevant to mention that Star Wars actually did win the 1978 editing Oscar (and definitely deserved it), just as Jaws did a couple of years earlier.

Critical Mass are outside now, cycling the wrong way up a one way street and playing shit music so loud the building is shaking. And they wonder why people hate cyclists. Tossers.

If someone is selling advice on getting rich the way they did, that proves that it no longer works, as selling advice is more lucrative and they wouldn’t want the competition. It’s not a statement of success but an admission of desperation.

4. Re stoner's fantasy: Never forget, it contains characters called Lay Organ and Hand Solo.

3. It was what happens when you hand a stoner's vague fantasy to highly-skilled professionals (i.e. fabulousness).

2. It was unexpectedly so successful that it created an incredible momentum that they could ride for a bit, but eventually they had to strap an engine on it to keep it going, despite adding all sorts of pointless detail to it.

1. Its proper name is "Star Wars: You know, the first one".

It depends, does "the unlit alleyway between the bookie's and Greggs" count?

I didn’t realize it was on iPlayer, so thanks for mentioning it. Never saw it before. Worth it for Alec Guinness alone.

There are enough competent and reasonably priced real actresses exactly the same that it's not clear why they feel the need to confect one. Presumably in the interests of tedious debate. The most interesting thing about her is that she doesn't exist.

Grangousier @johnpeacock.com · 15/09/2026
She looks like a perfectly plausible actress, but one who plays a middle Bennet sister, or a romcom heroine's chum, maybe appears in adverts for fancy ice cream. Concerned girflfriend in Casualty. Poppy in a provincial tour of Noises Off. Not a movie star.

I gave up on Today back when it revolved around the daily conversation with Michael Heseltine in the Radio Car. These days I mostly get angry about the fact that Radio 3 is turning into Radio 2 (apart from the breakfast programme, which is Hospital Radio With Strings).

Actually, in my case it was the opposite - the mechanism was fucked, but I really needed to keep the barrel (or I'd have had loads of AirBnB-ers ringing my doorbell trying to get in), but yes.

Grangousier @johnpeacock.com · 06/09/2026
Exactly! I don't want the Prime Minister to respond immediately and loudly because it gives them an importance they really don't deserve. And I don't think it would be skilful for the police to respond to provocation by being provoked.

(So that I could replace only the latch unit and leave the fiddlier-to-fit baseplate in place on the door. Sorry, probably useful to add that detail.)

Grangousier @johnpeacock.com · 06/09/2026
Understood - me too! - I and only mention it because it was actually very easy, which depended on managing to get an exact replacement.
110
Grangousier @johnpeacock.com · 06/09/2026
I realise it depends on the latch mechanism and other factors, but I found that the latch to the building (in which I live in one of the flats) was finally fucked after a slow decline, went to the local hardware store and got an exact replacement, all done within an hour. Not hard to do.

Wait, is it actually a toblerone the size of the box? I assumed it was a box full of a number of normal-sized toblerones. I'm suddenly interested in what I thought was just a silly thing, now I know it's ludicrous.
000
Grangousier @johnpeacock.com · 29/08/2026
It's the perversity of indeterminacy in action: The cable you wanted was potentially in the box until the moment you decided you needed it, at which point it resolved itself as a SCART cable you didn't even know you had, and never possessed a device you could plug it into.

I could never get past level 1 of Tomb Raider 2 (I think), so to me it was a short film about a woman who runs around for a bit before jumping into a pool and drowning herself.

Oneupmanship is definitely real, I watched it when it was on. Features Peter "The Book" Jones, who was also in School For Scoundrels (which had the same source material). I thought it was funny at the time, but that was fifty years ago. I didn't realise it was on YouTube.
