It's something I'm kind of surpised SH2R didn't get more flak over, I remember when they showed the first PH boss scene specifically and he's got anime air slashing lines on his attacks and looks like a Bloodborne boss or something, yeah it's cool! Not really fitting a inner-personal nightmare imo

It was a minor point with SH2R but it was also guilty of this, trying to make things look flashy, more viseral and imo that's always illfitting for horror games. And no I don't mean that in a "SH/RE games were scary because the controls/gomeplay sucked" way, miss me with that shit

As a DMC/stylish action fan this thread is incredibly on point. You wouldn't think it would be the case but imo this also applied to classic SH, deliberate combat mistaken for clumsy. And you can see a pattern in the post 2005 era, often devs trying to "fix" SH with more flashy comat

I'm on mandated time off streaming but you can help me out! Twitch has a strict system when it comes to disabling pre-roll ads on streams, 3 minutes of ads every 1 hour. I have it set to 1.5min every 30min, so the question is would folks rather 1) No pre-rolls 2) Pre-rolls w lowest amount of Ads

My POV is SH4 is a flawed mess with moments of SH1-3 greatness hidden within, but you do have to deal with some BS to get to it. Homecoming on the other hand there's nothing under the surface and the more you try to look the more you see how little there is, despite the best intentions

I do agree 4 is a big step down from the 3 previous games, controls included, Henry's blank protag personality I'll admit I enjoy ironically at this point. The sacrement victims I thought were one of the few interesting new things about SH4, honestly shame they weren't all unique

Oh for sure, I spoke to a few devs when we originally covered the game for the BGHOF history section, the sentiment I got from one developer was Homecoming was trying for a more advanced combat system than The Collective/Double Helix were capable of (their Da Vinci code game was an example given)

??? That might be the most surprisingly thing to me, the guy is thirsty and you only have one non healing drink item in the apartment at that point. I remember some of the late game puzzles being more annoying than that. Maybe not helped that the guy chuggin choco milk is a SH meme I already knew

That's funny because for most encounters the Knife is the best weapon in the game, almost every boss enemy cannot deal with the attack speed, I wasn't even trying to cheese the game when I found that out I just randomly got bored of the combat and started mashing and somehow was doing way better

Most of SH4's weapons aren't breakable that's only the golf clubs and the wine bottle (imo gag weapons). I don't like SH4's inventory slot system granted makes guns so weak, Homecominghaving such awful aiming and BS ammo cap I find far worse though

It's funny because I almost feel entirely opposite about every point here, 90% of Homecoming combat is mashing one button cos the knife stunlocks almost everything, the story has more holes than Harry's apartment in 4 (Hayo) and SH4's expanded cult lore and Walter are great stories

I personally find this interesting as a lot of Homecoming's gameplay issues are the same issues SH4 had but 2-4x worse. SH4 was too experimental for it's own good but it's still genuinely unsettling at times with a pretty great story within. Homecoming however is a boring cliche romp for me

Hey glad to discuss it more and expand on our points, it was nice, and yeah "you can do it" attitude is the way to go. Heck I'll probably try fully beating Metroid 1 myself someday (I'm very directionally challenged the lack of map filters me too, I get lost too easy :S )

Yeah this is the POV I'm about as well, I agree with this. To be clear I don't think you can argue older film making from say, 80-100+ years ago is "objectively" outdated, but I do think you can argue a lot of early years of mediums are often considered that way socially

We literally do hold older media to these standards, it's just far older art forms so those examples aren't from the last 20-30 years, video games are still relatively young considering. Also yes I know this is all subjective I figure that goes without saying but also some people online so I get it

The best way to put it is if you played almost any other Metroid or even Metroidvania style game that came out in the last 20 years, Metroid 1 will not match those standards, which obviously it wouldn't, so bringing up 1980s standards is a moot point to me

It also it frames past standards as acceptable as they were then now and that I fundamentally disagree with. We can and should both acknowledge that Metroid NES's playability was standard if not exceptional at the time but will feel dated if you're used to standards from the decades afterwards

I don't think that entirely works as a point because that assumes the vast majority if not all the people who brought Metroid beat it. That's a hard metric to judge considering even today roughly only 20% of people beat games they start playing

I've seen enough footage now to see the PS2 versions even have some updated stages, even a new ghosting effect on the boss fight Xbox version I really goofed on that is a full on remake. Point is Dead or Alive 2 is no longer a "Play Elsewhere" tier I'll be giving it it's own proper ranking
