A lot of University of Delaware (Bartol Research Institute) physicists have worked on ICECUBE so this Nobel Prize mans a lot. Congrats to Francis Halzen!

I have the feeling that someday I may regret mixing tables named best (my preferred values) and best (Will Best’s published values), but it’s not stopping me.

Today’s remedial lesson in programming is that a-b*c is not (a-b)*c. Sad thing is that the screwup was when I was checking my correct calculation so I went down the wrong path entirely.

I laughed at that failure to cover first because the Brewers looked like the Yankees. Maybe that Nixon account mislead me.

It worked! We observed a calibrator through the mask, but off the coronagraphic spot, in order to flux calibrate the system. We have transmission! We will get proper behind-the-mask observations in a few months. How exciting! We officially have another optical wavelength coronagraph in space! 🔭🪐
Images of the calibrator source through F070W, F090W, F115W, and F150W filters. These are only level 2 images, single position, not post-processed. This is what I could quickly grab.

The dataset is PUBLIC! Go have at it, if you wish.

My first thought when looking at this: very cool, but what planet is it? It's the Earth🤦‍♀️ Why does the Earth look smooth and featureless, other than the auroral ring? It's because Smile is an ultraviolet telescope, and Earth's atmosphere is opaque at ultraviolet wavelengths shorter than ~300 nm.

"The fungus Paecilomyces javanicus, particularly in combination with phosphate-rich bird poop, can clean up lead-contaminated soils by locking up metallic lead as pyromorphite." I'm sorry, but graphite (or graphene) has NOTHING on this use. Lead removal is the defining factor for me - #pyromorphite

Split photo with deep blue translucent crystals jut upwards in a cluster like modern skyscrapers on the left. They have lightly striated faces, and are long with pointed tips. On the right is a metallic grey triangular crystal with deeply striated faces. The face itself is geometrically broken with jagged edges, evoking a cyberpunk-futuristic vibe.
