Presenting raw public expenditure over time distorts the real picture. It ignores inflation & growth. Expenditure as a % of GNI is very stable in the Republic at 40% of GNI*. It was 53% in 2013 towards the end of the crisis. EU average is 49%. We can spend more www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2026...

It's striking how much schools in London have improved since 2009. The English regions have more or less stayed still, which is impressive given significant declines elsewhere. Scotland, Wales and NI are all doing very poorly by comparison.

This poll seems to be a statistical outlier - its results are quite different to others even with the very wide variations in polls. What is clear is that somewhere between 27% and 10% of people in Northern Ireland respond that they are uncertain how they will vote.

27.8% of the pop. of NI is on an Outpatient Hospital Waiting List, - 11% in the South. - 15.6% of the pop of NI is on that list for longer than one year, - 1.8% in the South. The South has v. serious issues, so these comparisons show a NI system in crisis. www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/politic...

This is clearly personal for Micheál Martin, but his position is unpopular with the party membership. The grassroots do not expect him to demand that the UK call a referendum, but Fianna Fáil are now the only party in the Dáil who actively oppose planning. www.irishtimes.com/politics/202...

There's lots that's batshit about UK academia of course, but this thing where every year a selection of everyone's publications get anonymously scored by their senior colleagues is by far the craziest aspect.
A post that says: "Just finished this year's round of internal REF reading: one of the many tasks in academia that is hidden from view. Always nice to read colleagues' work; less nice to have to write a report and score it against quite loose descriptors."

Crossing the EU border between Bosnia & Herzegovina, & Croatia, I was struck with what we might have faced on the land border in Ireland, without the Protocol. Two passport checks, everyone on buses had to get out, have photo taken, finger-prints. Queues. No fresh meat or cheese from BiH into EU.
