Listen. Listen. @shappy.bsky.social and I are making new stickers and they're going to be very good. That is all.
Overhead photo of the Raw Signal Group HQ sticker bowl, with several of our favourites laid out on a coffee table, including the RACI knuckle tattoos, "Super fucking clear", Really just like this, and Swearing is caring.

The nakedness of the "fuck you, you deal with the costs of my laziness" is really getting to fever pitch. I got this email yesterday and somehow the last line makes a shitty thing so much shittier?
Screenshot of a cold-email pitch, clearly slop scraping my LinkedIn that reads:

"Hey Johnathan,

Loved your LinkedIn take about leadership being fundamentally about people—'it's all made of people', right?

I've built a system that helps leadership consultants like you consistently spark high-value conversations using AI, so you spend less time prospecting and more time transforming how people work.

I'm happy to share the automation blueprint we use, if you think it could be beneficial.

Cheers,
David

PS — Love that you have 'strong opinions about coffee infrastructure'. Btw if you don't want me to follow up, just say the word and I'll disappear. No hard feelings.

(yes, this email was written by our system)"

In unrelated news skywatch seems to have flagged this post for… some reason?

I feel like it would help people out if more orgs used this post-it note as appropriate.

I don’t need to give any attention to Ye and the hateful shit he’s up to. But that store of his selling swastika tshirts is proudly powered by Shopify and if you have people in your life who work at that company, maybe ask them how they feel and what the fuck they’re doing about it.
A screenshot of the source code from yeezy dot com. Only the top ~30 lines are visible but one line is highlighted, showing that the site is served by Shopify’s content distribution network, that is, this site is powered by Shopify.

Step N+1: the person with the keys will tell you that having the option to disable specific integration points is an enterprise-only feature, but that they can add it to your account if you confirm that's what you want. A few minutes later, it's active. Ours now looks like this.
Updated screenshot of google admin panel for "Gemini for Google Workspace" -- the panel now has a panel labelled "Feature Access" with the ability to toggle gemini in Drive and Docs, Gmail, Chat, and Meet. They are all toggled to Off.

The core problem we're trying to solve is this — there are no switches where the disable controls are supposed to be. Same problem @litbowl.bsky.social describes fighting for several hours to solve and we are in their debt.
A screenshot of the google workspace admin console, with the Generative AI -> Gemini for Workspace panel selected in the left sidebar. The main panel shows some preamble text but, where there ought to be a set of toggles to disable Gemini integration in various products, there is instead just a wrench icon and text that reads,

"No more settings to show
There are no other settings in this service."

Their current version is here. www.shopify.com/legal/aup It’s… shorter! They’ve preserved their figleaf, of course, their lawyers are not stupid. But it’s getting to be a pretty small leaf!
Screenshot of current AUP language that reads:

You can’t breach the social contract of commerce.
There are activities we don’t allow on the platform because they breach the social contract of commerce. This means you can’t call for, or threaten, violence against specific people or groups. And you can’t sell products that facilitate intentional self-harm.

Back before the US election it still contained language about hateful conduct, exploitation, harassment. Here’s a version from January for instance. web.archive.org/web/20240101...
Screenshot of a way back machine version of the AUP, from Jan 1, 2024. The visible excerpt reads:

The following activities are prohibited:

Child exploitation: You may not offer goods or services, or post or upload Materials that exploit or abuse children, including but not limited to images or depictions of child abuse or sexual abuse, or that present children in a sexual manner.

Harassment and threats: You may not offer goods or services, or post or upload Materials, that harass or threaten a specific individual.

Hateful content: You may not use the Services to promote or condone hate or violence against people based on race, ethnicity, color, national origin, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, medical condition, or veteran status. You may not use the Services to promote or support organizations, platforms or people that: (i) promote or condone such hate; or (ii) threaten or condone violence to further a cause.

Illegal activities: You may not offer goods or services, or post or upload Materials, that contravene or that facilitate or promote activities that contravene, the laws of the jurisdictions in which you operate or do business.

Looks like it's hosted on webflow. I don't know about their enforcement rigour, but their acceptable use policy (webflow.com/legal/aup) is pretty clear, particularly section 5(a).

5. Harmful or Illegal Content
a. Do not use the Service and/or post User Content that harasses, bullies, defames, or threatens a specific individual, or incites others to do so.

If you see this post a bird. The resplendent quetzal. What happens when the universe lets a three year old design a bird.

The newsletter that @shappy.bsky.social and I write every other Wednesday just came out, and this one is exploding. If you are a director, or manage directors, or report to a director, well.
Excerpt that reads

The thing that makes directors different than managers, the reason you pay them, is strategic integration. They aren't the ones authoring the organization's strategy, but strong directors are the ones who make it go. They connect the dots. They translate overall direction into terms and priorities their teams can understand. They identify and mitigate risks early. And they light the senior team on fire with the insights and opportunities that they can't wait to jump on.Excerpt that reads

That's what a strong directorate does. That's what organizations are paying for with their director salaries, but it's not what they're getting. And there are two significant problems with that state of affairs. One is a basic value-for-money issue that's fair to scrutinize at any level of the org chart. But the larger problem with having an under-equipped director layer, specifically, is that it breaks... everything.
