This probably roots in the argument that an AI system could make a better Wikipedia. Presumably by removing the people. I know.. Wikipedia has edit wars and its talk pages are often unbearable.

“Now why is it not opt-in?” said Minton. “That’s what everybody here is spamming in chat. I get it. ‘Let me opt in versus making me opt out.’ There’s an honest answer, and I think most of you can probably appreciate this: If it was opt-in, nobody would opt in. That’s honestly the answer.”

This was followed by a torrent of all-caps chat responses that included “THEN DON’T ROLL IT OUT,” “SO WHY EVEN DO IT,” and “IF NO ONE WOULD OPT IN THAT MEANS NO ONE WANTS IT.”

Fuck cars 🤝 Fuck "AI" sunny.garden/@librarysqui...
Mastodon post by me, reads as follows:

If we compared pro-automobile discourse and pro-LLM discourse we'd probably find many similarities, probably more than what I can think of off the top of my head (like enablement stories, abuse of disability, does more good than harm etc).

Ultimately that's probably because the tech is also quite similar: the car promises a heaven of effortless and liberated mobility unburdened with the trappings of society, but in reality it's unsustainable, costly, environmentally destructive (EVs included), and its fundamental operation is at odds with human wellbeing and there's no way around it. There's no way to reconcile fast blobs of metal roaming freely with a safe and comfortable life. And we have been made to dump or ignore much better alternatives so it can be sold to us, and so we pay for the infrastructure that allows it to ruin our life.

The LLM promises effortless access to the commonwealth of human knowledge and skill, unburdened by the toil of learning or practice for your own work, or unmediated by economy and society should you prefer to acquire the fruits of someone else's labour. The reality is ofc even worse than with the car, all you get is slop distilled from the garbage juice of the internet, which is enclosed, and now set to be extinguished and abandoned.

Fuck cars 🤝 Fuck "AI"

Entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel is this year's recipient of the Axel Springer Award. The award is also intended to be a symbol of freedom of expression and open debate.Thiel is also attacked and discredited because of his theories. For example, a discussion event with him at this year's Vienna Festival was cancelled following protests . Axel Springer stands for freedom of expression and an open culture of debate.

Very few narratives piss me off as much as the whole "let's give marginalised people LLM assistants for inclusion".

Inclusion does not mean giving marginalised people shittier versions of a thing: Sure you can give kids from poorer backgrounds an LLM to "learn" but what you are saying is that poor people are not worth having trustworthy sources of information. When you say that older or lonely people can talk to chatbots to feel less alone you are saying that some people are not worth a social life.

This is a deeply inhumane perspective that goes actively against the ideas and ideals of inclusion.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.
