People don't long for "inconvenience." They long for permanence. And though streaming services may be convenient, people are waking up to the fact that we are paying rent-seeking middle men month after month for things we will never actually own.

Healthy accountability is triggered by evidence, points upward at power, and happens in public. Disordered accountability protects insiders and aims its punishment outward. What the document does is argue for the second while calling it the first.

Anti-war writers from Goodman to Orwell to Arendt all found the same problem: mediated communication converts moral energy into the feeling of having responded. The LLM perfects this. You walk away feeling you understood something. You didn't.

Anthropic's head of safety just resigned. Most likely a protest against the company's pivot to working with Palantir and Gulf Arab states. The "don't be evil" stage gets shorter. (I still think Anthropic is the most morally run of the AI corps but it's like cherrypicking rooms on fire.)

This resides in an uncomfortable portion of my brain where capitalism's desperate search to monetize everything, even nostalgia in times of duress, has trouble reconciling with the other parts of my brain that want the protests to be strong and productive.

Common Sense, published 250 years ago today.
Men who look upon themselves born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent; selected from the rest of mankind their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed to the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions.

AI occasionally says things that are... Odd.. here it claims that slower speeds are "counterintuitive" in trying to recover data off an old damaged CDROM. It is not counterintuitive. I expect it to be slower.
Optical Drive Quality and Speed: The performance and error handling capabilities of the CD-ROM drive play a crucial role. Some drives are better at reading damaged media than others. Slower read speeds, while seemingly counterintuitive, can sometimes be more successful in extracting data from problematic areas.

Third, Moncrieff comments on the "creeping medicalisation of a widening array of life problems". Certainly, there has been a growing tendency to medicalise misery or unhappiness, along with other aspects of the human condition, including worry, bad behaviour, and grief. A longitudinal study in New Zealand reported that 35% of people aged 11-15 years met the criteria for a mental disorder, rising to 44% at age 45 years; does this finding represent a true escalation in mental ill health, or is it a reflection of changing criteria of what qualifies as disease?

Invisible, as Music
But positive, as Sound-
It beckons, and it Baffles
Philosophy- don't know
And through a Riddle, at the last Sagacity, must go - To guess it, puzzles scholars
To gain it, Men have borne
Contempt of Generations And Crucifixion, Shown
Faith Slips and laughs, and rallies Blushes, if any see
Plucks at a twig of Evidence And asks a Vane, the way
Much Gesture, from the Pulpit-

WE HAVE always gone on the theory that an increase in the amount of material goods and leisure time gave the individual a wider area of choice by which to make his own inner life rich; and it has been part of our traditional philosophy that the individ-ual, confronted with this choice, would know how to use it wisely. These were the assumptions that lay, so to speak, at the end of that rainbow of material progress we followed through the first century and a half of our national history. We are getting enough evidence today to examine the validity of these underlying assumptions. And the results of this examination, so far as I am concerned, are not encouraging. I am not sure that the area of choice for the individual is really made wider by the conditions in which our material plenty is being achieved.
