🌍 Global temperatures are likely to cross the 1.5°C threshold within years, according to a landmark @unep.org report co-authored by Professor @joerirogelj.bsky.social. The report calls for urgent action to minimise the scale and duration of 1.5°C overshoot.

Global temperatures are set to cross 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels within years, leading to an escalation of climate impacts, warns @unep.org in a landmark report co-authored by @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social 's @joerirogelj.bsky.social Read in full 👉 buff.ly/ZKLfRau
Headshot off Joeri Rogelj against backdrop of the climate stripes, with a quote from Prof Joeri Rogelj: Overshooting 1.5°C is a painful reminder that failing to cut greenhouse gas emissions has consequences we can now no longer avoid, only limit,” says Professor Rogelj. “Our response requires mitigation and adaptation to move together: near-term emissions reductions limit overshoot and reduce harm, but weak mitigation will push communities and ecosystems beyond their ability to adapt"

Mitigation strategies must be robust to climate impacts, while adaptation planning must consider how much warming could still occur. Greater confidence in mitigation enables more targeted adaptation. Conversely, insufficient mitigation will push adaptation to its limits. /12

Joeri Rogelj @joerirogelj.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Across these phases, adaptation and mitigation are mutually reinforcing and interdependent. /11
110
Joeri Rogelj @joerirogelj.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Third, a long-term resilience response phase combining warming reversal with continued adaptation. This includes sustained net-negative CO₂ emissions to reduce climate hazards, with continued efforts to close any remaining adaptation gaps and enhance sustainability and societal resilience. /10
110
Joeri Rogelj @joerirogelj.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
This involves strengthening resilience under higher levels of warming, alongside sustained and deep decarbonisation towards net-zero emissions. This phase persists until global warming stabilizes. /9
110
Joeri Rogelj @joerirogelj.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Second, a coping and containment response, starting immediately. Local and regional decisionmakers need to plan for a world above 1.5°C where warming needs to be halted while communities and societies are protected. /8
110
Joeri Rogelj @joerirogelj.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
First, an immediate response phase. For adaptation, this requires urgent implementation of measures to protect poor and vulnerable populations from foreseeable impacts. In parallel, mitigation must focus on immediate implementation of measures that reduce global GHG emissions and slow warming. /7
131
Joeri Rogelj @joerirogelj.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
The response to the realisation that global warming will overshoot 1.5°C comes in three phases in which adaptation and mitigation actions are closely interconnected. /6
120
Joeri Rogelj @joerirogelj.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Dealing with overshoot means doing more, in more places, at the same time: cutting emissions, adapting to unavoidable impacts, protecting the vulnerable and preparing for a long-term decline in global temperatures. /5
120
Joeri Rogelj @joerirogelj.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Mitigation and adaptation must move together. In an overshoot world, mitigation and adaptation are two parts of the same response: mitigation determines how much climate change we ultimately face, while adaptation determines how well we cope with the change we can no longer avoid. /4
160
Joeri Rogelj @joerirogelj.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
We know what drives warming, we know how to stop adding to it, and we know that deeper cuts today mean less warming tomorrow. Overshoot makes acting on that knowledge more urgent, not less. /3
