Public factories can overcome the (rational!) producer risk aversion in the face of long-term business uncertainty that can hold back abundant production of critical products like transformers. Read more (and subscribe) here: vanderbiltpolicyaccelerator.substack.com/p/the-abunda...

Why New York City Needs Public-Powered Pharmacies
New York City has a growing pharmacy gap, and the culprit is corporate power.

CityRx can help create a healthcare ecosystem where no New Yorker faces barriers to medicine because large corporations abandoned their neighborhood or squeezed their local pharmacy.
100
Joel Dodge @joeldodge07.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
CityRx could serve as a foundation for even more ambitious reform. For example, over the long term, CityRx could move toward direct drug procurement, bypassing wholesalers to offer patients more affordable near-manufacturer "cost plus" pricing.

Second, NYC can boost its independent pharmacies to get fairer terms from PBMs, access to cheaper delivery options, and support to grow their businesses.

Joel Dodge @joeldodge07.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
First, NYC can build on existing programs that work to create city-owned delivery, mobile, and retail pharmacy options.

Joel Dodge @joeldodge07.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
We propose using public power to strengthen NYC pharmacy access in two ways: (1) Public options for new city-owned pharmacies (2) Industrial policy for independent pharmacies

Joel Dodge @joeldodge07.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
NYC has seen nearly half of its big chain pharmacies close in the last few years. Meanwhile, smaller pharmacies are squeezed by large pharmacy benefit managers and drug wholesalers. That has left New Yorkers with fewer options & higher costs.

Because it dominates the current generation of clean tech, energy insecurity episodes (including the Iran war) redound to China's benefit. The U.S. could flip this script by going all in on the next generation, such as by using public factories to mass produce next-gen batteries.

For example, public factories could help the U.S. leapfrog China to mass produce next-generation batteries. They could also help overcome supply-side bottlenecks for electrical transformers.

Public factories were largely abandoned by the US during the Cold War. We argue it's time to bring them back: as a new industrial policy tool, and to promote abundance and antimonopoly. There are several legal pathways to do it - including through the Defense Production Act.
