Every game of chess ends prematurely
Why do we play chess for checkmate instead of playing more naturally to capture the enemy king? Would it be game-theoretically equivalent? Surprisingly, no, the two ways of playing are not equivalent.

I am realizing that the lively online community of game players in my Connect 4 app is very likely a community of bots. I found it a little strange to play Fred from France and Emilia from Japan, but then realized that the player names rarely fit the country. They must be mostly fake.

Today's topic in the Philosophy and Logic of Games: The fundamental theorem of finite games. Over several lectures we shall give five different proofs of this core result, and discuss how the arguments generalize in various ways to classes of infinite games. www.infinitelymore.xyz/p/fundamenta...

The fundamental theorem of finite games
In every finite two-player game of perfect information, either one player has a winning strategy or both players have drawing strategies.

I am regularly getting these kinds of messages now, often with inquiries that set off my AI detectors.

Joel David Hamkins @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But the sample writing is totally AI and even the email message itself. This puts me totally off, but I would like to understand the nature of the motivation better.

Joel David Hamkins @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I get those kinds of emails also, but recently it is something different, since (unlike the Chinese students) they aren't asking for any official status or admission. They claim to be independent researchers and just want to work together on a paper, closely related to my interests.

Joel David Hamkins @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Is this a variation on the book-club scam, or is this instead a way for them to get validation of their AI paper that they don't understand? Or what? What's the scam exactly?

Joel David Hamkins @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Is everyone getting these emails, full of flattering details from one's research program, and asking for informal supervision, aimed at knowledge and possibly a supervised article or paper? It sounds plausible at first, but the emails are AI/mixed-AI generated, so...sorry, but no.

She had a book Die Familie Hamkens aus Eiderstedt, detailing the family history at Hoyorswort. The were hundreds of photos and big family tree going back to the 16th century. There were hundreds of photos, including one with the same name of my great great grandfather, and the same birthday.

So giants are impossible, if they are conceived as scaled-up replicas of humanity. But giant being are possible, if their physical features are different---this is clear.

But notice the definite differences in proportions from a smaller animal, such as a garden lizard. These legs and backbone are extremely stocky, just as Galileo predicted. So this example illustrates Galileo's point, that you can't just scale up a physical specimen and expect it to function.

Galileo’s Paradox of Infinity—Lectures on Infinity (lecture 6)
Galileo recognized that some infinite collections can be placed into one-to-one correspondence with a proper subcollection. How are we thus to make comparisons of size with the infinite?

So actually, A is c.e. and undecidable. But there are no instances of n∈A that are independent of the theory T=PA+¬Con(PA), since this theory proves that A is everything.
010
Joel David Hamkins @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Nevertheless, "consistent" is not enough in this argument, and that one does need existential soundness. Let A be the set of halting Turing machine programs (on empty input), unless a proof of a contradiction in PA is discovered, in which case every number is enumerated into A.
110
Joel David Hamkins @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Thus every instance of computable undecidability is saturated also with logical undecidability, even with respect to our best aspirational foundational theories.
110
Joel David Hamkins @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
In short, every c.e. undecidable set A is saturated also with logical independence, in that for any of our aspirational foundational theories, if both consistent and sound for Sigma_1 assertions, will have many independent instances n∈A.
110
Joel David Hamkins @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
If theory is furthermore sound for existential assertions, this means that n∈A will be often independent of the theory.
110
Joel David Hamkins @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The point being that proofs of n∉A in a consistent theory extending PA are reliable, since upon finding the proof we couldn't afterward find that n∈A, since this would reveal inconsistency in the theory.
110
Joel David Hamkins @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Nevertheless, for any consistent theory extending (or interpreting) PA, such as ZFC or ZFC plus large cardinals, there will be infinitely many instances of n∉A that are not provable in the theory, for otherwise we could decide A by searching for proofs.
120
Joel David Hamkins @joeldavidhamkins.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Suppose that A is a computably enumerable set that is undecidable. Of course every instance of n∈A is provable in PA, since we verify that the algorithm proceeded as it did.
