With apologies to Tom Lehrer, it's important to keep your career progress in perspective. Whenever I'm feeling down about my lack of success, I remind myself that when H.P. Lovecraft was my age, he'd been dead for eight years.

What you anti-AI activists refuse to admit is that THIS IS A PROVEN BUSINESS MODEL. The industry is perfectly on track. Sheesh. Just wait for the plan to _ripen_. You're going to feel pretty silly when AI hits the maturity of 'too big to fail/bail out with staggering amounts of public money.'

Is there an element of: Dems, knowing fully well that Good Thing X isn't achievable, sensibly don't try it. Yet our voters don't (all) demand they -achieve- Good Thing X. We want them to try and fail and KEEP TRYING forever, like Rs with xenophobia, authoritarianism, and widening the wealth gap.

The Governor just signed my bill to allow people to sue ICE, Border Patrol, and other federal agents for violating people’s constitutional rights. Starting immediately, people can sue federal agents retroactive to abuse occurring in March 2025.

So delighted to be bringing this book with its simply gorgeous cover to the UK. Retaining Maxine's whimsical and charming illustration was an absolute no-brainer - it fits the book so beautifully! And then our lovely Profile designers decided on a font that seemed to fit the story perfectly 😍

I know this might help electorally, but do not forget that the *vast* majority of Republicans still support Donald Trump. They have *not* 'learned their lesson' or had an 'epiphany' or whatever other horseshit that people who want to be buddies with Republicans might say.

I mean, it has to rely upon inconceivably-large-to-humans datasets to complete the sentence/action. I don't doubt automation exists! A car-making robot 'knows' the next step in building a car. It 'knows' far better than I, and will attach bolts with superhuman speed. LLM is linguistic automation.

I don't. You could be a bot! To be honest, I don't know anyone who is worse than me at distinguishing what is AI-derived and what is human. But there are bots we all know are bots, yes? And that is what lets me distinguish.

Joel Dane @joeldane.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
Is that true? I'm hardly an expert but I've heard that LLMs very much do not have 'mental models' of the world. And actually, I think it's fascinating that using massive, massive datasets to predict likely responses to linguistic prompts mimics minds.

They're not really communicating, are they? They're serving tremendously-sophisticated autocomplete prompts to each other, then responding to those prompts in tremendously-sophisticated ways, and most horrifying, the content of the autocompletion is derived most from shit we posted online.

THE LAST INFINITY is out now! Come check out my book about time traveling disaster gays and the terrible things I put them through: books2read.com/b/bwMZ99. #TimeTravelAuthors #WritingCommunity
White text on a red starry background that says "Out Now!" and then lists the following tropes: time travel, found family, mlm and wlw relationships, I'll love you in every reality, disabled MCs, chronic illness, androids and robots, set on Mars. Available on Amazon, Kobo, Smashwords, and more!White text on a red starry background that reads: Cal Hunter is a cryo, a person who was cryogenically frozen after his death in the 22nd century. Resurrected four hundred years later, he now lives in the 26th century and works as a time traveler for the time agency on Mars.

After a mission goes disastrously wrong, Cal returns to his present to find that he's seriously altered the timeline. All life on Earth and the Moon has been wiped out, leaving only a failing settlement on Mars of fewer than two thousand people. Even worse, Cal can no longer time travel due to his injuries.

The only person who can fix the timeline is Renata Carr, a teenager from the 20th century. She's brought out of cryogenic suspension, and a reluctant Cal is put in charge not only of her training, but also her well-being. Meanwhile, Renata grapples with the grief of waking up in a strange century on another world while also coming of age—and falling in love with the daughter of one of Cal's friends.

When disaster strikes the settlement, the timeline for humanity's demise rapidly speeds up. While Cal knows he must send Renata on a mission she isn't ready for, and which will likely kill her, he is torn between saving humanity's past, present, and future, or the girl he's come to see as a daughter.
