She was being an asshole and then doing the "I'm just a little birthday boy" bit and I made fun of her for it and she blocked me. Guess she doesn't like jokes

How do heat pumps perform in Canadian winters? I know they've been improving cold weather performance but I wasn't sure how many compromises you needed to make there

Any reason you're replying to this criticism and not talking about the Nazi who works for you?

As someone pointed out down thread "there were no civilian casualties on Oct 7" is a more extreme position than Hamas's public position after Oct 7

I had a dresser that looked from the front like it sat flush on the floor but *apparently* had empty space behind it and that, naturally was his chosen location

The bullshit thing about this is even if you grant the stupid premise that there's a religious liberty interest in no one getting married that you disprove of, it would still be stepping on the religious liberty of others! Why should an evangelical get to tell the Episcopal church who we can marry?

All the time? If I drive to work, pop home to change, then go visit my parents 45-50 minutes away that's over two hours in the car.

To put some numbers on it, let's be very generous and say you get only 10% worse range on the highway and 20% less in cold weather. Assuming you're charging at 10%, that's 130 miles on the initial leg and about 100 miles on each subsequent 10-80% recharge. The real numbers are likely worse
000
Joe Ickowski @joeick.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I think this is extremely unlikely, 200 mile range in a cold weather climate is genuinely a Problem. We're talking "need to stop to charge every hour or two on the highway" in winter

I had maybe one paper all through college where one professor wrote in the feedback that I'd actually changed how she thought about one of the movies we'd watched and I rode that high through the rest of undergrad and part of grad school. It's not about that normally!

That's very situational depending on local prices, how much you drive, your charging situation, etc, but the leap from pure gas to electric is one of the rare places where replacing before you need to can genuinely make financial sense.
100
Joe Ickowski @joeick.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I will say depending on how much you drive, replacing the gas car with a cheap EV could be worth it. I put about 5k down on my bolt and pay ~$170 a month, but since I drive ~1800-2000 miles a month for work and have free charging I'm saving ~$250 a month on gas right now.

Joe Ickowski @joeick.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Yeah I think the fundamental problem is a lot of people want a sensible, affordable, unpretentious hatchback and approximately 0% of those people are in the business of buying new cars. You don't manufacturer for the used market
1120
Joe Ickowski @joeick.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I think more broadly the problem is no new car is ever really a good deal vs a even a lightly used one so you need a *very* specific level of price consciousness to buy a cheap new car

There's some really great old-timey anti-italian stuff from around then about how all our garlic and popery and general swarthiness was going to turn all the good Protestant boys and girls into gluttonous sex crazed maniacs

Most people know a few hundred people. It's just very hard to have a group of people that large that doesn't contain a couple folks with shitty politics, no matter who you are
000
Joe Ickowski @joeick.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
But most people simply do have those people in their lives, simply by laws of averages. 9% of black women voted for Trump! If you've met 50 Black women, odds are very good you met at least one Trump voter, and that's the not that many people even in the most anti-Trump group in an exit poll!
100
Joe Ickowski @joeick.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Many of these people are not safe people, even for me, and frankly I'd never you come out here and do what I'm doing. Some folks who are more vulnerable than me do, and I salute them, but they're taking a huge risk and it would be insane to *ask* them to do it
100
Joe Ickowski @joeick.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
And that's true for the queer people and the non-white prior and disabled people who live in most of those places. And for what it's worth, while I'm obviously in less danger on a percentage basis, I've knocked on literally thousands of Republican doors in some of the reddest parts of this country
100
Joe Ickowski @joeick.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I mean it's really not making a lot of assumption for the overwhelming majority of Americans. Most of us are not working academic jobs in one of the most liberal cities in one of the most liberal states in the country. You do just run into people when you live in most places working most jobs

It does seem to be very much "well, unwinding marital property would be a pain in my, Sam Alito's, ass, so that's a reliance interest, but telling a woman who moved to a state assuming she could get an an abortion 'tough luck' isn't very difficult so that's not a reliance interest"

Joe Ickowski @joeick.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I took at as "most of us, even in very left leaning social circles, have that childhood friend with weird politics, or the dipshit 19 year old cousin who listens to bad podcasts, or sweet old neighbor with bad politics, and we should try to earnestly engage with those people in our lives"
110
Joe Ickowski @joeick.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I took that to be the point of the video? He mentions doing this with people you already know and otherwise like; for all but the most left-leaning social circles there's going to be at least one of those. Even the most left leaning areas and demographics still have ~5-15% Trump voters!

Joe Ickowski @joeick.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I mean unless Trump suddenly gets way more popular 55+ seems plausible in '28. We'd have to run the table this year but in '28 we have a crack at Wisconsin and the other NC seat and a couple of stretch goals (FL, the other AK seat) and not a ton of seats to worry about in a blue year

Fundamentally it has zero impact. A world in which California might go red is a world in which the Republican has already won by unimaginable margins. The electoral college is bullshit but it means protest voting in deep blue states basically has 0 cost
