This arrived today - from Australia! The Blake & Mortimer comics are by Edgar P. Jacobs, a colleague of Hergé. Wordier and more scifi than Tintin. I knew there was a TV show but never imagined it would be released on blu. Psyched.

I probably shouldn't write my 'review' of the new M. John Harrison novel after a few beers on a Saturday night but here we are. Some of the 1* reviews on Goodreads are hilarious.

Initial thoughts are that this is Harrison’s take on ‘Roadside Picnic’ but he takes the idea of an alien incursion into earth into much stranger territory, on a Ballardian high. These aliens are unfathomable and there’s nothing to be gained for humanity.

It’s also an unsubtle but genuine critique of the United Kingdom and its responses to the crises of the 21st century. Imagine boats wanting to leave this island for a legendary Europe! It’s like the funeral rites for the UK as we know it.

Technically, the conceit of the ‘bad patch’ is a brilliant device for blurring the lines between the real and imagined in every single paragraph on every bloody page. Only apparently real someone once wrote.
