That $366 million Elon is spending to try and convince voters that Congress should stay Republican? It's more money than McCain's 2008 campaign spent. But it's also, relative to Musk's net worth, the same as a household at the median income spending $32.

The 2026 question: Which is more powerful, money or people?
Elon Musk has spent $366 million this election cycle. Philip Bump examines what that kind of money can buy in American politics.

We all are concerned about our privacy, the lack of accuracy in what they share, and the experimental nature of a lot of these new technologies. There’s a lack of community oversight that impacts all of us - but who is hurt first and worst? Low income folks, people of color, women, lgbtq+ etc.

Joe Gallenstein @joegallenstein.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
And we are seeing ICE utilize these tools as well. Even if there isn’t sharing from local governments, their presence can create a chilling effect that discourages immigrant families from enjoying things like our libraries and parks - cutting them off from their neighbors.

They also are often found in over policed communities - low income, black and brown neighborhoods, majority renter, etc. This especially creates a sense of fear and being watched for our neighbors with felonies in their past.

Highlighting the growing list of people killed by federal immigration agents, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree and other Democratic members of Congress on Tuesday heard from family members of those killed about the Trump administration’s pattern of obstruction and lies about the shootings and victims themselves. The shadow hearing, which was held in Washington, D.C., underscored that despite new leadership at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, little has changed.
