Civil Rights, philosophy, anticapitalism, abolition. NLG forever. Personal opinions and no legal advice. I think taking fascism seriously requires us to actively change. What we’ve been doing led to this.

I don’t understand why it’s politically pragmatic to wake up every day like the world is brand new and dream this dream that Republicans are going to rebuke Trump. It’s been 11 years, mayor. What is the threshold for atrocities and war crimes where you stop holding out this hope for the GOP

The modern-day legal basis for the criminalization of immigrants largely rests on two anti-immigrant bills signed into law by Bill Clinton 30 years ago. The IIRIRA and the AEDPA further entrenched mass incarceration and laid the blueprint for the detention and deportation machine we have today.

I want to see how the Zohran school of politics finds its way to the upbeat and palatable demolition of the police state. He has pulled off other improbable political feats. But the deal appears to be daycare et al in exchange for ongoing NYPD dominion and surely that’s incompatible with socialism

Tammy Duckworth’s deeply held belief in the value of fascist collaborationism is obviously tragic but at least very instructive about the core politics of this party. If the fascists always have to save face, then we can’t ever beat them. If you can’t take power from rich people, ever, that’s it.

I didn’t press them and try to convince them that I was going to make some profound difference. I wasn’t sure myself. I only hope that it was made clear that [an encampment cleaning] is not an insurmountable natural disaster. They are human beings working mundane jobs for the city who have become apathetic and dispassionate over time, and who need to be reminded that carelessness, neglect, and shortcuts in their line of work are a material act of violence on the residents of encampments. I know [the workers] were annoyed and inconvenienced by my presence. I only hope that later they asked themselves why someone who isn’t being paid would choose to spend their day at a homeless encampment filming the city doing a routine encampment sweep.

Screenshot from Mark's article about a recent ruling by Hawaii Supreme Court Justice Todd Eddins, reading as follows:

The Roberts court, Eddins declared, “sees only white. It refuses to acknowledge who the Equal Protection Clause was written to protect. The freed people, their descendants, and all others denied equal citizenship. It turns its back on what is in plain sight. The Fourteenth Amendment is not colorblind. It never was.” He continued:

The court calls the Constitution colorblind while engineering the dilution of Black votes, the unraveling of hard-fought civil rights remedies, and the erasure of Black history. That is not blindness. That is white sight, by design. A Constitution interpreted this way is not colorblind. It is whatever the court needs it to be. A way to advance its partisan project.
