I love being a complete beginner and the concept of apprenticeship but something about digital music is so daunting that it breaks people and starts making them ask if their hammers are hammering nails wrong

If you only need local network access, you might be able to create a really thin locally-hosted web client that sits in front of something like google drive or dropbox. You can just password protect the client, and it will handle encryption/decryption. A web app would have it be platform agnostic.
