It should serve as the 'gezellige' living room of the city: a place where residents and tourists feel comfortable spending time, where children move freely, and where local businesses benefit from a vibrant public realm. 215834
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 12/07/2026While he was referring to the 2016 election, I often think of this prediction coming to fruition in 2028. But I'm indifferent that he won't be here to witness it. 010
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 01/07/2026Yes, I took pictures of containerized trash and retractable bollards, but you've seen that from me before and you know my position on it. But so many of the things I listed above are achievable in Philadelphia, so it begs the question: Why can't us? 080
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 01/07/2026Finally, I was amazed by the functional architecture; not just single-stair buildings but also passageways and first floor commercialized halls that cut-through buildings to create pedestrians shortcuts. 140
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 01/07/2026I was a bit surprised by some of the larger vehicles I saw, but small cars still ruled the day. 140
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 01/07/2026The primary public art appeared to be sculpture. In my industry, we talk about "creating whimsy" with a pop-up, or something temporary or unexpected around the corner. I felt the sculpture in these cities created whimsy on a permanent basis. 260
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 01/07/2026The architecture was beautiful in all three cities, both historic and modern. 270
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 01/07/2026The main playground in Budapest was perhaps the best I've ever seen. I didn't grab a great pic, but it was like Philadelphia's FDR Park on steroids. But even a small park in Prague had this trampoline device I've only seen in Iceland. One block away, a fountain is used for water play. 160
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 01/07/2026Curbless streets and streets with raised intersections were common. 160
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 01/07/2026I stayed in three apartments, each of which were single-stair buildings, allowing really spacious, well laid-out apartments. This single stair in Prague was particularly beautiful. (This was actually an entrance stair, leading to the interior stair.) 140
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 01/07/2026Bumpouts were prevalent and multipurpose. Here is: -a bus/tram bumpout -a dog area bumpout (with fencing and waste collection) -daylighting bumpouts with scooter racks -daylighting bumpouts with greenery 150
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 01/07/2026In Budapest, they pedestrianized two single parallel blocks creating a u-turn street of Budai Nagy Antal Utca. The southeast block (Hollan Erno) is a market/cafe street but also has two loading zone spaces; the southwest block (Jaszai Mari) is greener. Buday Nagy is also a significant tram stop. 170

Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 01/07/2026Full-time, outdoor market in a full-time pedestrian zone, natch. And so much outdoor dining! 170
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 01/07/2026I recently returned from a trip to Prague/Bratislava/Budapest. And of course, identified some quality "why can't us?" content along the way. But since there was a heat wave there last week, and one here starting today, I'll start with this: misters! There were walk-through misters in each city! 1140

Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 03/05/2026Unfortunately, we won't get federal support. When municipalities are offering subsidy, are they offsetting that cost in their budgets? (E.g., smaller road repair budget.) 000
Job Itzkowitz @jobforphilly.bsky.social · 03/05/2026This is great, thanks! I posit that in the U.S., advocates' best short-term solutions are probably at the micro/local level. Inventives for using bike delivery or restrictions on truck deliveries, loading, tax policies, etc. 010
