I’ve had some very good well paying indie clients through the years so it would make sense to makes things easier for them! I guess the conventions of the commercial illustration world have made me hesitant to list rates publicly (like, I don’t want to be *under* paid by a big corp accidentally?)

Oh this is a really good page! I have a pretty detailed commission page with rates for my portrait commissions, specifically, and that works really well- but for whatever reason I haven’t made one for illustrative commissions and I probably should.

I made official shirts for Bewitching Peddlers of Halloween in 2024 and 25. I have a few left (not all sizes available) and have marked them down to $15 just to cover printing and shipping. www.joannabarnum.com/shop

Digital painting. An old human skeleton lying on the ground, some parts of it are buried or broken, it resembles a fossil. The ground under it is a stone with a lot of ammonites in it, they are different in size and color, some are iridescent.

Hey, we miss you. I know you have other concerns on your plate but any time you want to make something together, let’s do it- a comic, an illustrated story, a ttrpg adventure, a zine- whatever meaningful thing we can just make and get to people without a giant corporation.

It can be hard for normal people to imagine a situation where you'd invest billions, then just throw away most of what you bought. But above a certain scale, companies aren't in the "build things to last" business. They are - as we have all heard many times - in the "shareholder value" business.

“Autumn Arrival,” watercolor from several years ago…the season blowing in. Can you feel it? Happy fall! Getting spooky. Getting cozy.

Made another batch of these little experimental mixed media pieces before DragonCon. This group inspired by species from Cornwall with collage bits from old books I got in a local shop while there. I love making these as a palette cleanser between bigger projects.

The common magpie in the UK is Pica pica, whereas the magpies in the western United States are Pica hudsonia, even though they look indistinguishable to me. Apparently they were considered the same species until the year 2000. Prints & original are up in the shop. www.joannabarnum.com/shop/

Then we learned that it’s more of an old timey way of saying you should greet or acknowledge them. Apparently many people say “Good morning, Mr. Magpie, how is Mrs. Magpie?” I love magpies and can’t help but be overjoyed to see them, alone or in groups. Here I painted two with English bluebells.

“Magpie Study (Two for Joy)” finished just in time to bring to Dragon Con! Saw so many of these guys in Cornwall, where we learned to “salute the magpie” to counteract any bad luck from seeing a single magpie. At first we took it quite literally, we started giving them a military salute.

“The Lovers,” watercolor. I painted this piece in the flat in Cornwall earlier this year, based on my photos of the Glastonbury Abbey ruins, a possible legendary burial place of Arthur and Guinevere. Some legends say that upon his death, Arthur transformed into either a raven or a Cornish chough.

We can’t know for sure exactly what these monuments meant to the people who built them, but I feel a deep resonance across the ages with the human urge to create for artistic, symbolic, memorial, and spiritual reasons, beyond the strictly practical.

When visiting the famous Stonehenge & Avebury, I was struck by the great efforts ancient people undertook working together to create these monuments, digging with simple hand tools, and moving stones across great distances, during a time when simply surviving took a great deal of energy and effort.

You ever decide on some unifying “rules” for a self-generated collection of art and then partway through the process get progressively more frustrated with the rules, as if there is ANYONE to blame but you yourself?

Looking for artist reviews of the Canon Pro-1100 printer? My Pro-1000 just broke after a good 7 years but the model is discontinued. Looks like the 1100 is the replacement. (Also, um, anyone with a pro-1000 want a deal on extra ink?)
