I've just signed a contract with @princetonupress.bsky.social for my book When Things Get Personal: A Philosophical Guide to Conflict, and am getting down to my final round of revisions. Philosophy got really exciting for me when my research met real life, and I look forward to showing you how.

I'm a philosopher interested in how our understanding of what it is to be a person can shape our understanding of the dynamics of interpersonal relationships and conflict of all kinds. Looking for new ways to connect three years after quitting X. #FirstDayOnBluesky

The Walton family (who own Walmart) are worth over $400 billion, yet many of their employees are on SNAP. Bezos is worth over $400 billion, many Amazon employees require SNAP. The people who need help are not the problem. It’s corporate greed. It’s an unwillingness to pay a living wage.

On the one hand, 21 individual meetings with students about papers in one day is a lot. On the other, it is A LOT.

Remembering that time in 2006 when I invited someone to come give a philosophy talk, offered our normal $500 honorarium, & got a polite reply if, "Because you are a friend, I will only ask for $5000." We had never met. We never did meet. But that's how we became friends.

Not sure. Next step is to look at double majors, minors, etc. experience is tough to track, and I'm not sure what kind of granularity we have from the survey data. Double majors are quite common) and encouraged) though.

🤷Our internal data are a bit better anyway. If you find better national data, I'd love to see them. They are notoriously hard to collect reliably, of course--it needs the kind of persistent multi-year effort that the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project has made for the arts. snaaparts.org

Savoring that moment in a meeting when an administrator pulls up income/career data on graduates of a "practical" business degree & pulls up, on an impulse, Philosophy as an impractical degree for comparison. Friends, the data quite emphatically did not show what he thought they would show.

Pff. Did the the liberal justices even bother to TRY to write their dissent in R'lyehian, the language of the Old Ones? At least the majority's approach is shrouded a respectful silence appropriate to the Cthulhu Cult.
