Unfortunately, I do think I know someone who is pretty susceptible to this kind of manipulation. I tried to tell them about the limitations of the technology and how it can be misleading and they basically said "yeah, but not the way I use it". 🙄

The stuff is for organizing your thoughts before a meeting or brainstorming what to make for dinner. It's not supposed to be a replacement for your accountant, editor, or therapist.

Like it is really a shocking revelation that fancy autocomplete programs are bad therapists? You don't expect a calculator to fix your relationship with your father. I wouldn't expect ChatGPT to have much better insight.

All these "AI gone crazy" articles out there sound like this to me: "Machine that tells people what it thinks they want to hear tells people what it thinks they want to hear when they ask leading questions to get it to tell them the thing they want to hear."

It didn't matter what the author meant by "the curtains are blue". What mattered was your ability to have an idea that's yours and prove you can defend it with evidence. It was not about getting the right answer, no more than going to the gym is. The exercise is the point. Your brain is a muscle.

Ya know, when Google+ came out I was like "we have Facebook already, no one needs this! But if Google+ came out today, I'd be like "sure, why not?" There just isn't a solid FB replacement out there. Bsky is alright, but it's more Twitter than FB and I wasn't ever a big Twitter person.

In other news, The Trump Admin is outlawing ice cream and making it mandatory that a puppy is kicked at least once a day. Because the only policy this regime has is "Americans can't have nice things".

Not to be a wide-eyed naïf about such things but... am I right in thinking that they levelled an entire building to get to one guy and *that* is not controversial to anyone in the American media or political class, only that this information was recklessly shared in an unsecured chat?

Screenshot of the Atlantic Signal exchanges, including Michael Waltz saying "the first target - their top missile guy - we had positive ID of him walking into his girlfriend's building and it's now collapsed".

Today I lost an NIH grant training clinicians to do research about intimate partner violence with perinatal women. More women are murdered in the perinatal period than die of obstetric complications. I didn't just lose a grant. We lost an entire cohort of people building careers to prevent that.

Cutting Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security will result in people dying. Cutting medical research and funding will result in people dying. Cutting foreign aid, FEMA and NOAA will result in people dying. A few cars on fire is considered violence, but somehow the rest isn’t.

Blackwell does a ton of these books that are all about the philosophy of various pop culture franchises. It's okay. Very surface level, imo, but not bad.
