"The Fall of the Rebel Angels" (1889) by James Ensor, an expressive, highly textured Symbolist painting depicting the biblical battle from Revelation. Radiant arches of luminous gold, yellow, and red sweep across the top half of the canvas, casting divine light over a swirling, chaotic vortex of tumbling figures in greens, blues, and dark tones below. The agitated, dense brushwork merges celestial light and fallen angels into a fiery visual storm of spiritual crisis and apocalyptic judgment.
Created during a period of personal isolation and friction with mainstream art institutions, Ensor often used religious themes of fallen figures, mobs, and divine judgment to express his views on social upheaval and human folly.
