Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying

You may use AI tools only for limited support tasks, such as brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, or formatting your book. You must not use AI to generate the text, create the artwork, or translate the book. ISBN Canada does not issue ISBNs for works whose content is primarily generated by AI. This week my MA group enthusiastically agreed to do part of the seminar screen free. They later asked why the library only had digital copies of the assigned books; they wanted physical copies. They resent AI. I wonder if universities are ready for the counter-revolution against tech?

I disagree. The economics of AI don't even come close to working unless there is both massive, massive uptake in use and massive innovation that creates new uses. Creating and maintaining a culture of refusal is a crucial way of slowing the uptake and innovation processes down
