In today's blog post, I tell the story behind the often-overlooked Prince of Persia 3D (1999) The one in between the original 2D games and Sands of Time.💾 Thanks to the website Players in Kyiv for remembering POP3D on its 27th anniversary!🙏❤️ jordanmechner.com/en/latest-news

If we go with "computer games": the first image. From the minute I realized stories could be interactive, I was hooked. If we define "video games" as requiring graphics: the second image. Dramatic music, cinematic cutscenes... I fell in love. @jmechner.bsky.social you have much to answer for 😂

The opening "scene" from Zork I: The Great Underground Empire, released on many systems but this is the C64 version.

Image is mostly white text on a gray background. At the top there is a static header in black that shows the location and score: "West of House [...] Score: 0/0". Beneath that, text reads:
"ZORK I: The Great Underground Empire

West of House
You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door.
There is a small mailbox here."
Below this, there is a prompt ">" and a blinking black cursor awaiting input.

Karateka, by Jordan Mechner, originally released by Broderbund Software for the Apple II in 1984 and ported to the C64 (among many other platforms) in 1985. More than half the screen is taken up by a pale grayish-blue sky and a Fuji-like peak in the distance. In the foreground, in front of a black wall, two figures clad in white gi with black belts face each other. The figure on the left (the player character) is kicking toward the other at torso height, while the right figure stands back in a guard position. At the bottom of the screen, a series of red triangles on the left and blue triangles on the right represent the health / life bar of each combatant.

After @jmechner.bsky.social ‘s diaries, here is another amazing book that makes me incredibly nostalgic for a time I was too young to fully experience. Thx for sharing your story @johnromero.bsky.social !

I've been thinking it might be fun to buy a copy of @jmechner.bsky.social's Karateka for the PC-98. I got excited when I saw this one in BEEP in Akihabara... then noticed it was actually sealed (!!!) and even with the favorable exchange rate and no tax, it would have been $750.

Reading @jmechner.bsky.social's The Making of Prince of Persia at the moment and it's so cool to see the constraints of game development back then (probably not for him). Makes me want to make things! Also funny to imagine that world in the same week the extended look for GTA 6 came out 😂

Nice find, very rare! I still have the one copy of this they sent me in 1985- it reminded me of a Kodak Super 8 film box, like the kind I used to film the animation reference! www.jordanmechner.com/en/games-mov...

i know everyone has been dying for my take on emily wilson's review of nolan's odyssey and so here it is. it should be an embarrassment to whoever edited it. when a writer files copy like that, you should know how controversial it will be and go above and beyond to help them shore up their take.
