Happy Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! No matter what Trump or Hegseth say, diversity *is* our greatest strength—and our AANHPI communities have proven that time and again. AANHPI stories are American stories. Always have been.

I was trying to figure out what 'sound background' to put up behind my morning and this album caught my eye. It has been in my music library since it came out. But the subjects could have been pulled from the news today. It's a cross between industrial and rap - but the whole thing is prescient.

Wif alt text. (Used OCR; apologies if I missed any typos.)

Screenshot of a tumblr exchange:

korrigantsionnach writes:
I want a story about a king whose son is prophesied to kill him so the king is like "whatever what am I supposed to do, kill my own kid wtf is wrong with you" so he just raises him as normal, doesn't even tell him about the prophecy, and instead of some convoluted twist of events that leads to the king's murder the son grows up and when the king is very old and dying and in excruciating pain the kid is just like alright I'mma put him out of his misery.

broliloquy replies:
The king's son becomes the new king, and is prophesied to defeat evil and bring an age of prosperity. His generals and knights all crack their knuckles but he pretty much ignores them and focuses on strengthening the infrastructure of his kingdom. Forty years later he is old and sick but still hearing his subjects' grievances, and a general's like "how will you defeat the prophesied evil now?
You're old and weak." Another visitor, a teenager fresh out of the kingdom's public education system, looks at the general like he is an ignoramus. The king eradicated poverty, housed the homeless, taught the ignorant, ended class exploitation by abolishing the nobility and imprisoning the corrupt, and established a highly respected guild of doctors that recently figured out how to cure the plague. There are no brigands because there is enough wealth for everyone to live comfortably; hiding in the woods and taking trinkets from people simply doesn't make any sense for anyone but the desperate, and the people are not desperate. Evil is a weed, explains the teenager. It grows in cracked roads and crumbling houses and forgotten corners, rooted in indifference and watered by suffering. But the king demands that broken things be mended and suffering people be made well.

No evil lives in this kingdom, says the teenager. It starved to death before I was born.

DisneyPrincessOfIyrian replies:
Oh yes.

The fed. gov’t is ~20% of the US economy, spending money on those things that the private sector cannot provide - infrastructure, early stage R&D, defense, security, hunger. To shut that down is to carry out Russia and China’s foreign policy, destroying all that makes America the envy of the world.

#WritingCommunity I have a couple of books percolating in my head that want to get out. What would you suggest as a place to look for feedback as I begin actually writing them down? And possibly monetizing them with an eye toward actually getting them published...

This makes sense... Because if Russia can just take over land then that means that the U.S. can too (i.e. Greenland and the Panama Canal). To support territorial sovereignty in the rest of the world would mean we couldn't ignore it ourselves.

The fight for abortion care and the fight for trans rights are the same fight. It is the fight for bodily autonomy. If you do not have control over your own body, you do not have control over anything.

And would still raise problems if any of the embryos were determined to be nonviable. Would they have to be implanted anyway? Just hoping that they would die???

jmchugh.bsky.social @jmchugh.bsky.social · 21/11/2024

If the people trying to have babies are responsible then the costs will become impossible to afford. Trying to change the procedures so that there are never extra embryos would increase the number of rounds of egg harvesting necessary.

Or would the federal government have to take on the burden and have to build massive freezer complexes to store them? Do the states? Which ones? What new taxes would have to be imposed to pay for all of this? Or does this require an entire new industry to be created? And still...who would pay?

jmchugh.bsky.social @jmchugh.bsky.social · 21/11/2024

And what happens if/when they are intentionally or accidentally destroyed? Would that depend on the state (in the country) that it happened in? Legal and fine in some states and criminal in others as abortion has become?

Do we require every couple (or person) to pay rent to the IVF clinics to maintain those embryos for the rest of their lives? Their children's lives? Do the clinics just have to take on the burden of doing it themselves increasing the cost since they have to charge at the outset?

100

jmchugh.bsky.social @jmchugh.bsky.social · 21/11/2024

Here is the issue that endangers IVF. The idea that life begins at conception. That makes every embryo a person. So, what do you do with the extras once the people who created them are done having babies? Destroying them would be murder. Who then is responsible to maintain them forever?
