An excellent article by @annahelhoski.bsky.social on catastrophic risk and prediction markets, featuring ideas from me along with some other people who think it is a good idea to bet on disasters (I do not) www.nerdwallet.com/finance/news...

Kalshi is offering a new Heatwaves category in disaster betting, & Polymarket has just added Drought. Does anyone look at this and seriously think "hedging function" and "price discovery mechanism"? Or is it more "yeah let's pass the time and maybe make a few bucks while the planet burns amirite"?

Good piece in @theguardian.com about the US Senators' letter to the CFTC expressing concern about the Polymarket wildfire markets (which, as I say in the article, is only a year and a half late...) www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Important article from @highcountrynews.org -- must-read for anyone interested in catastrophic risk, prediction markets, or the danger & depravity of "arson markets." I wrote about Polymarket wildfire markets and it is horrifying to see some of my worst fears realized... aeon.co/essays/what-...

Prediction markets are a hot topic lately, but media coverage is overlooking some important angles re weather & climate markets. I have been following this for a year & a half--here is how I see it: 1. Media focus on insider trading has oversimplified the story 1/ www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

The CFTC expects us to believe that Minnesota farmers must be allowed to bet on Kalshi because they "have relied on critical hedging products on weather and crop-related events for decades to mitigate their risks." That is called crop insurance. The idea that ad hoc betting on precipitation and 1/3

If I have to explain to you why it's a bad idea to use a machine that makes shit up 15-80% of the time AND destroys the environment AND contributes to rising fascism and genocide AND puts brilliant skillful creatives out of work by stealing their work, then we're already speaking different languages
