There also must be an independent investigation, led by the NYS Attorney General, to ensure accountability for this shooting. I’m also calling for a thorough review of NYPD actions yesterday. It is the job of the NYPD to preserve safety and peace, not to facilitate ICE detentions and deportations.

I’ll try to track down the stats, but studies leveraging variation in timing by state found that raising the drinking age did substantially reduce road deaths in the 18-21 age group. (Also, I’m now thinking about some pretty hilarious train journeys in Switzerland involving very drunk teens!)

Setting the legal drinking age at 21 saves a lot of lives that would otherwise be lost to drunk driving, bc most parts of this country have no public transport. And, it probably also creates a host of other problems.

This explains so much. My great/grandparents were anti-Zionists, and as a result rejected most Jewish communal institutions. They spoke Yiddish at home, never Hebrew. I have never thought of Israel as part of my identity as a Jew — which makes me illegible to most American Jews.
