I'm thrilled to share that I've started as an Assistant Professor in Biological Sciences and the Oceans Research Center at Lehigh University! I'm building a group in evolutionary genomics to study the origin of animals, and to use those concepts to better understand human disease. More: evogeno.me

🌿 Congratulations to the 2026 BSA Impact Award recipients, the Disabled in Botany Affinity and Action Group: Haley Branch, Caroline Brose, and Bryan MacNeill! We're grateful for their leadership in building a more inclusive Society. 👏 #BSA2026AwardsBlitz #IamaBotanist #PlantPeopleFTW
A row of three portraits, from left to right: Haley Branch on a mountain summit, Caroline Brose in front of a snowy mountain range, and Bryan MacNeill beside a tall cactus. The text reads: "Botanical Society of America 2026 Impact Award. Haley Branch, Yale University. Caroline Brose, University of Wyoming. Bryan MacNeill, Cornell University. Disabled in Botany Affinity and Action Group." A QR code and the text "Learn more about the Impact Award here!" appear at the bottom, along with the Botanical Society of America logo. The graphic has a border of orange marigold flowers.

1/ BRAKER4 hatched! The Earth BioGenome Project is on track to sequence ~1.5M eukaryotic species. Every one needs a structural annotation. No Perl monolith was going to survive that. So we rewrote BRAKER from the ground up. github.com/Gaius-August...

Our eLetter github.com/caseywdunn/s... responding to a recent Science paper was just posted. The paper found more genes with consistent support for sponge-sister than ctenophore-sister. We found several technical issues that, when corrected, reverse the conclusions and recover ctenophore-sister.

TIL about two AI-generated stories that disparage my science and academic integrity. I cannot prove that they were paid for by #ColossalBio or its co-founder Ben Lamm, but you can read them and make your own decision: www.apnnews.com/who-is-vince... www.ceotodaymagazine.com/2025/06/vinc...

Unsolicited listicle: My list of the most criminally underused/underappreciated phylogenetic comparative methods. Note, I am not involved in ANY of these methods; but I see them as things people are often asking of comparative data but have been surprised at how infrequently they have been cited.

Our bryozoan paper is out in @genomeresearch.bsky.social! Led by @tomlewin.bsky.social, we report genome shuffling across the phylum and synteny evidence for the Lophophorata hypothesis. Grateful to John Bishop @thembauk.bsky.social and the DToL project for sharing openly! doi.org/10.1101/gr.2...
