My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

I’ve just voted, and I’m happy to report that the line reached out the door. If you can vote in advance, Albertans, it will probably save you time to do. Every referendum question is an embarrassment. No, worse: they’re disgusting. Alberta can, should, and — I hope — *will* be better than this.

A bit late responding here, but I often ponder the peculiar path wood takes - from the perfect organic form (the tree), to a rectilinear commodity (the board), and back to an aesthetic and curvilinear form (the instrument).

Alberta Landscape # 3 - Your daily inspiration to go vote Oct. 19 (or vote early, Oct. 13 - 17) to keep this country united. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Feeling thankful for so many things, not least of which is being Canadian. 🇨🇦 "River's Keep" (Watercolour | 18 x 30"|2016 | private collection) 1/
Watercolour painting of Castle Mountain reflected in the rocky waters of the Bow River. The sky is clear and the mountain glows red orange in late afternoon light. Though ice and snow frame the far shore, the river is open and reflects and intensifies colours, and abstracts the shapes in moving water.

Looks awesome, Erin! You’ll learn what adjustments in baking time (and/or temperature) to make to get the best out of your starter and oven - but your first loaf looks great!

🇨🇦 In light of the impending referendum Oct. 19, I will post one of my Alberta landscape paintings each day hoping it reminds you how foundational Alberta's natural heritage is to our identities as Albertans and Canadians. Please vote! 1) "On Guard" (watercolour, 42 x 15", private collection) 1/3
Watercolour painting by Jennifer Annesley of Cascade Peak just outside the town of Banff. Colours range from sky blue to pale pinks and golds in the clouds and snow, deep black and burnt orange in the rock faces and trees.

Hey, thanks! What I love most about guitarmaking is the meditative nature of it. By taking it slow and using sharp hand tools, I can achieve pretty good tolerances (typically within a few thousands of an inch), which is pretty satisfying!

Donald Trump had over 2M followers on Truth Social in 2025, including institutional accounts representing every major media organization in the USA and many of their reporters as individuals.
Before and during the genocide, all inside Rwanda, as well as many who lived abroad, were aware of RTLMC's direct incitement to violence against Tutsis. It nonetheless pursued its broadcasting without much interference.

Yikes! I appreciate that a common descriptor of the SV650 is that it "crashes well." Not that I'm *planning* on crashing it - but since my goal with this (soon-to-be-track-only) bike is to develop skill at riding near/at the limit, I'll happily take that trait over "its metal is prone to tearing."

Awesome! My big KTM has too many sensors, servos (incl. in the suspension), and computers (6!!!) for me to feel all that comfortable doing many of the tasks I’ve done on motorcycles (and cars) in the past. So, I picked this up as a project bike - and I’m looking forward to getting greasy with it!

So fucking tired of almost being run over while walking my dog in my own neighbourhood. This time it was an F-350 w/full trailer - whose driver apparently thought that because the sun was in his eyes, he was absolved from worrying whether or not there was a pedestrian in the crosswalk.
