Belgium's irresistible city of Brugge (Bruges) has a rich history of trade and an affluent merchant class who built lavish houses on a maze of canals and cobblestone streets; a medieval labyrinth in which to wander and wonder. One is lured down endless passageways by the enchantment of light, conversations, music and aromas spilling from restaurants, cocktail bars, lobbies. Late at night, there is a moment when most reasonable people have gone home and businesses are preparing to close but lights are still on, revealing elegant & inviting interiors. Another passageway invites the wanderer to keep discovering new processions of ancient houses, another canal, another square, maybe another café open for a nightcap. Warm amber light and red brick contrasts with midnight blue sky and deep shadows, café chairs cast serpentine shadows on table tops after a fleeting rain shower.

A Neo-Gothic "bridge" spans between two stone façades over a cobblestone street, lit with wall sconce lanterns vanishing down the slightly arced street into the night. In the top third of the composition is the bridge with a triple Gothic arch and lattice railing forming not only a connection between the buildings but a vantage point from which to watch over the street. An arched door is slightly ajar in the foreground and together with warmly lit windows, extend the narrative to the interior. Colours are mostly warm ochres, golds, deep reds, burnt sienna, with values ranging from pure black to white.

Original watercolour/charcoal/pastel by Jennifer Annesley. A pyramidal mountain catches afternoon sun with clouds drifting in and casting shadows on a glacier fed emerald coloured lake. A smaller lake can be seen in the background, a sunny bright green alpine meadow accents the foreground. An unnamed peak & alpine lakes in a remote part of Alberta's Rocky Mountains. It took us 4 summers & a helicopter drop + 4 days of backpacking (one way) to reach this spot - was worth the effort to see and breath in such pristine wilderness.
