Anyway, before I get too carried away again, just to say that the already-familiar no.80 is a work of unalloyed genius. The mood swings of the 1st movement are almost Mahlerianly surreal. And as for the finale... well, just listen to it. And try to clap along.

Jeremy Limb @jlimb.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
basically swallows up the recap, anticipating the 'continuous development' technique of a later era; & the hesitant phrasing and quirky rhythms of the Andante totally threw me; I checked the score afterwards - it was in 3. I'd thought it was in 4. And that's before the ALLEGRO CODA. Which is in 2.

Today's commute, a.m.: Haydn - Symphony no.79. Today's commute, p.m.: Haydn - Symphony no.80. Don't worry, no essay today, just to say that no.79 ("seldom was Haydn less inspired" - Robbins Landon, Haydn's CHAMPION) I found to be as inspired as ever - the 1st movement's development section ...

For many listeners, it's this sort of thing that puts them off Haydn. Cos GREAT music is SERIOUS and must end with some GRAND STATEMENT or other, mustn't it? Must it? All I know is: sorry K491 but if it's a choice between your endless string of im/perfect cadences and THIS, I know which way I jump

Jeremy Limb @jlimb.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
You can never outfox him, he is always ahead of you, laughing. Ah yes, laughing - but hang on, we're in C MINOR. A SERIOUS key. PROFOUND. The first mmt. sticks to its dramatic guns, but the finale...? Well, it opens in C minor but, like a cat wearing a t-shirt, Haydn shrugs it off as soon as he can

Jeremy Limb @jlimb.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
That's right; how d'you get from Db to Eb? Why, by sliding through D, that's how! Again, this is Beethoven avant le lettre, and a lot breezier. And, to cap it, when he reaches this moment in the recap, he has less of a harmonic gulf to cross (Db to Cm)... but ADDS a bar anyway!

I'm not here to slag Wolfgang off; as I've said it's invidious to compare the two composers who, touchingly, were as fond of each other as any two geniuses ever have been. But it seems unfair that K491 is programmed incessantly and music like this never gets played:

Anyway, it starts like this; and it has been pointed out that it anticipates Mozart's Piano Concerto in the same key, K491. Ah yes, the great K491, so deep, so sublime...

Jeremy Limb @jlimb.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
And then there's Symphony 78. Did you know it was in C minor? No, of course you didn't, because NO ONE FUCKING PLAYS IT.

... meant that counterpoint was in his blood in a way it never could be for Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert. Speaking of Ludwig, his claim that he learnt nothing from Haydn is utter bollocks, and he knew it. Check out the cross-rhythms in the Minuet (a Scherzo in all but name) ...

Symphony 77 is utterly beguiling. H's phrasing is unpredictable but always apposite; his timing immaculate yet continually takes you by surprise. Both outer movements have the most breathtakingly insouciant contrapuntal writing - my theory is that his having been a choirboy in the High Baroque ...

Again, is it only me?? Every bar of these works just sings directly into my heart. It's not humour, or wit, but something even more profound - JOY, bone-deep; the sheer pleasure this Empyrean peasant found in playing his sublime games with the sublime toy that was the late 18th century orchestra.
