Am reminded today of a great @byjustinmiller.bsky.social story from February about Ken Paxton's unusually frequent travel, for dubiously job-related purposes, on the taxpayer's dime: www.texasobserver.org/taxpayer-tab...

Public records requests for details of Flock queries resulted in officers facing criminal charges. Now police departments in Texas are charging exorbitant amounts for, or simply refusing to release, those records. One might ask if this is not a violation of 18 U.S. Code § 1343 - Fraud by wire, radio, or television. One might also ask, if this was done by an AI agent, as some have speculated, who bears criminal liability?
Whoever, having devised or intending to devise any scheme or artifice to defraud, or for obtaining money or property by means of false or fraudulent pretenses, representations, or promises, transmits or causes to be transmitted by means of wire, radio, or television communication in interstate or foreign commerce, any writings, signs, signals, pictures, or sounds for the purpose of executing such scheme or artifice, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.

As a Texan, the Blaze Foley and Guy Clark story referenced in this piece are particularly galling, though my personal experience was with a fake Uncle Tupelo song. I’m glad someone is not just exposing these scams but uncovering how they function.

Because the Bank Secrecy Act so incentivizes reporting of suspicious activity and currency transactions, FinCEN is sitting on a mountain of data that could be mined for this type of predictive policing. Recent computing advances presumably make it even easier to pick targets.

They say a joke isn’t funny if you have to explain it, but I was half complaining about Austin’s decision not to extend the new light rail line to the airport and half complaining about how inconvenient LaGuardia and Newark are to reach on public transit. At least @ndhapple.bsky.social gets me.
