Confirmed drug-related deaths in Texas prisons and state jails have steadily risen from just four in 2020 to at least 131 in 2025. Some estimates suggest nearly 1-in-5 deaths while in custody is caused by overdose.

New from Gaige Davila: Since early July, ICE has arrested people daily in traffic stops throughout the Laguna Madre area of South Texas. On July 14, the agency announced that on just one day in June it had arrested 238 people in the Rio Grande Valley, an apparent record.
