Here's the Arnette, OK supercell/tornado time lapse from May 18. I haven't gotten a full tornado time lapse in quite some time, like ever. youtu.be/Y2zl1W2PMFw

I'm sure glad the radars are still running so we can see what a hailer can do to splatter the S-band radiation in all sorts of directions, whether from side lobes or the main beam. Earth is going to get close to this.#txwx

The thing about tools like cli-MATE and ACIS is not that the data won't exist (not yet at least). It's that they make getting the information you want so...efficient. Can I write some code to do the same task? Sure, but not everyone can, and why should we need to when a great tool already exists?

This lab makes it possible for the NWS to forecast severe weather at the level we do. They can do much more too. If lost there’s no going back to fix it.

Third night in a row of a gravity wave flying through OK. This one’s enough to reverse a 40 mph north wind to a 60 mph south wind.

Here's an odd CC drop that looks like a distant debris signature SE of Van Wert, OH. It's along a shear zone but not associated with a significant reflectivity line. That's to the SW. But I can't rule out a tornado either.

Look upstairs and see some amazing supercell updraft signatures NW of Memphis.

This supercell east of Cheyenne went up with surface temps in the mid 40's F. The storm appeared to have little rain, a lot of ice, and a rather prominent peak. It's got high Zdrs (much higher than anything down low), very low CCs and high spectrum widths. I've got my own idea what it is.

Is this why the only rotating storm I see is the left mover passing over Chickasha? Knock off the lowest 700m of flow and it's all negative SRH.

Thunderstorm gravity waves are flying through the Northern Lower MI peninsula. That means high wind gusts even with low 30s F temps. Cool! See the paper by Borchardt and co-authors. doi.org/10.1175/WAF-...

I pulled up GR3 and the storm total rain was saturated at 5” over most of the Brownsville and Lowe Rio Grand area. It’s so extreme I thought it was an error. Nope.

A new cell fired up north of the older cluster west of Mt. St. Helens. But so far there are no low-level velocity perturbations (like azimuthal shear).

Line graph time series of a 12-month running mean of global mean surface temperature anomalies from 1979 through February 2025. There is a long-term increasing trend and large interannual variability on this graph. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1991-2020 baseline. Blue shading is shown for below average anomalies, and red shading is shown for above average anomalies.

A complete and all-out attack on NOAA. Without a functioning NOAA there is no function seafood industry, no functioning radar network, no functioning weather models (US or otherwise). Would you cut a personal investment that saved you 70 times over your original investment every single year? (1/3)

There is just raging lake effect going on off of Lakes Erie and Ontario. KBUF is optimally sited to watch strings of mesocyclones approaching the city. I'm sure the same is going on off of Lake Ontario if it weren't for the radar elevation.

Final total + a few flurries: .43 liquid equivalent estimated by weight and 4.8” from core sample on garbage can lid resulting that gives an 11.2:1 ratio. Another Clearview can gave me a couple more grams of captured snow which appears to be >5”. I get .44” there. #okwx

I got .37” melted and 4.5” on the garbage can lid resulting in 12.2:1 ratio. I think the snowboard has a 10.8:1 ratio. Which is correct I don’t know. But the garbage can might be closer to ambient temp. #okwx

Here's a schematic I published in this 2021 piece to illustrate how even a modest delay in onset of rainy season in Southern California can dramatically amplify wildfire risk by lengthening seasonal overlap between dry vegetation and strong offshore winds during Oct-Jan. #CAfire
Schematic from Swain 2021 depicting how even a modest (1-month) delay in the Southern California rainy season can greatly amplify wildfire risk by increasing the temporal/seasonal overlap between critically dry vegetation and the occurrence of strong, dry offshore (downsloping) winds.

Look at the upright instability through KS tomorrow morning? This will be a top tier electrically active synoptic winter storm! I wouldn't be surprised to hear about elevated supercells dropping hail tracks along with freezing rain and ice pellets. Then these storms turn into graupel machines.

The Hollis Mesonet's 9.24" from Nov 1-8 is eye-popping for an area of the state that's typically desolate in the cool season. But how eye-popping? One week in, the entire NOV-FEB period for 2024-25 -- 1/3 of the year -- already has more precip than any other cool season since 2000-01. 😶
