And finally, there's just so much money Medians, p75s, p99s...they are in the data, they are in you, they are in your org chart, and they are in the society you operate within It's a firehose, and you're just sipping at it

Third: the stupendous size and resources of a company like Meta does not actually breed freedom to think clearly. It does bring lots of opportunities to find inspiring people to think with! But it is also a maze that pressures you all to adapt to it and lose yourselves within it

Second: shipping larger changes is much harder. I learned a lot there, have learned more since then, still have more to learn. But frankly, a lot of the difficulty comes from the fact that the presence of a problem is easy to show, even if that problem is very hard to identify.

First: safely shipping incremental changes to a billion devices is easier than you might think. It's mostly a matter of technique for a client engineer

I had such a stark realization about this when I started working at Meta and the mean was ~never used while looking at data. Everything was about percentiles: p50 (median), p75, p99, p99.9 etc

I have since privately received information that the lack of credit was in bad faith, and that this was a blatant and intentional ripoff. I'm not the only one disheartened by the lack of due credit.

Reading this immediately made me think about this thought from yesterday: bsky.app/profile/jing... If rain writes strictly here (a good assumption) then consider the exceptions - the space of code that only needs to work at one point in time. Test repros, POCs, explorations, examples...

Came across this cool terminal trick to batch renaming files on macos: benfrain.com/batch-rename... My use case was having a bunch of `MyFeatureV2_` files that I wanted to rename to `MyFeature_` now that the old version was deprecated. Super quick and easy.
Macos terminal command to batch rename files that contain MyFeatureV2 in the name to just MyFeature.

Command is: autoload -U zmv; zmv '(**/)(*)MyFeatureV2(*).kt' '$1$2MyFeature$3.kt'

An honest reckoning with that fact must include facing the utility of the automation, though "We will write all code this way" is a straw man. A walking, burning straw man that hurt me pretty badly, but a false nemesis anyway. If their output is useful, how can they not be put to good use?

Like, this is a true thing that is worth knowing and using. You don't have to be pro- or anti- AI to grok that fact and use it!

Bankers came round at an early job of mine to discuss financing over bagels. I knew nothing about it, but my dog Chauncey had cream cheese on his back somehow? Found out years later he had jumped on the table and eaten a banker's breakfast He lived 17 years, I cried like a child when he died

How the Democratic Party Runs on Elder Fraud

It's very bad. The text messages are apparently essentially an elder fraud scheme that only transfers minute amounts of money to the candidates. And no, it is completely impossible to get the messages to stop

If you want to know who survives AI, look at what happened to Hollywood in the 1970s.

Movie Studios used to enforce tight “shooting ratios”; usually 5:1, maybe 10:1 TOPS. As in, for every 5 feet of film shot, at least 1 foot had to end up in the final cut (35mm was expensive!)

Maybe more sympathetic to wasm's take on async (github.com/WebAssembly/...), which goes to such lengths to avoid function coloring that it requires you to build multiple call interfaces. It does mean that undoctored C code can call into IO libs marked async, but woof.

Anyway, it's just surprising to run across corners of the world like this one lack of function coloring is a huge boon... could be the circles I run in, but I have never heard people beef on `suspend fun` in Kotlin herecomesthemoon.net/2026/10/asyn...

Async Rust: Where does the scheduler live?
It turns out that some issues people have with async Rust are just downstream of hard concurrency problems.

And I've sometimes wished it were more generic because that's the direction our APIs have grown! Context params and receivers are often designed such that if you pull them off the stack, bad things happen. Like here, with CoroutineScope: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lss...

I call it stack-affine because marking something `suspend` or not is a type that I give to a function that, like a parameter, is passed through my call stack, but unlike a parameter is fairly firmly bound to the call stack. I can't just instantiate something to make a function `suspend`.

Today I'm trying to understand why some people have gone to extreme lengths to avoid function colored language features Having lived with Kotlin coroutines for a while now, I have more often wished that stack-affine typechecking (a term I made up just now) were more generic than
