Filled out a survey for UK authors and illustrators, about AI Licensing and Remuneration. My personal take on this was that there's no combination of money or terms, that would make me want to license my work to train Gen AI. At the end of the survey I wrote this mqedu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_...

Generative AI is based on plagiarism. It is trained by exploiting workers in the Global South. It is environmentally destructive. It replicates stereotypes, bigotry and other oppressive attitudes. It is highly inaccurate. It is psychologically damaging for those who use it, via encouraging dependency, the development of AI psychosis, or by leading to the erosion of existing skills. It is a way of overturning creative labour markets to cynically enrich tech bros. There is not ethical use of it. No amount of financial compensation makes it worth engaging with.

The thing about JKR and telling folks not to buy Harry Potter shit is it isn't because we think it can take away her fortune and platform. She's so rich she would still be rich if she never sold another book It is because it is literally the smallest possible hurdle to clear to value trans lives

PANEL 1: MATTIIE, sitting in a chair, slumped over in the dark. Behind her, you can see the green goblin mask from SPIDER-MAN (2002) but it has a phone instead of a mouth.
MATTIE: It's really too bad I have this observation that I can't articulate great yet. But I can't stop thinking about it.
MASK: HAVE YOU POSTED IT YET? EHEHEHEHE!

PANEL 2: A dutch angle shot of the mask.
MATTIE (VO): No…there's no way to say it without everyone yelling at me!
MASK: POST IT! YOU'RE A GENIUS!

PANEL 3: MATTIE, on her knees in front of the mask, crying.
MATTIE: No! Never!
MASK: POST IT! YOU'VE NEVER BEEN WRONG!

PANEL 4: MATTIE, typing on thephone.
TEXT: LATER
MATTIE: Oh yeah. Everyone is mad at me. Bigtime.
MASK: GET MAD BACK AT THEM

Remember when people used to be all “hard times creates great art” because no actually it’s just this.
