Lots of non-citizens are on the jury pool in Philly because they use DMV records and local tax payments to build their master list. (They get out of jury duty by simply notifying the court they aren't citizens.) This man isn't dumb. He's a con artist.

I keep seeing crap like this on Xitter - old stuff being posted as if its new. I guess it's a testament to how broken, epistemologically, that platform is, or how inefficient our marketplace of ideas has become, that crap like this gets rewarded in anyway (or not punished)

Emerson's monthly poll in July was conducted right after Trump's election speech last week. It caused a 10% spike in voters listing "threats to democracy" as the most important issue... but the increase came more from Democrats than Republicans. Trump's 2020 obsession will help Dems in November.

I know the predictive value of primary turnout for general election results is limited, but still: Hot damn - 400,000 more Pennsylvanians voted for Shapiro (D) than Garrity (R)! That's Democratic turnout at 63% of total partisan voters (and Dems lead with independents in the polls)

Rep. Kevin Kiley, who just switched from Republican to independent (but still caucuses with the GOP), also belatedly, obliquely stating his opposition.
The United States does not destroy civilizations. Nor do we threaten to do so as some sort of negotiating tactic. We should all desire a future of freedom, security, and prosperity for the people of Iran.

Congress has a responsibility to conduct oversight with respect to ongoing military operations and our obligations under both U.S. law and international agreements to which we are a signatory.

Got a House Republican also critical, albeit after lots of throat clearing
The United States of America must always be prepared to use overwhelming military force when necessary to defend our national security interests and protect Americans at home and abroad. 

And, a President should have the latitude to make decisions to that end, but only to the extent that those decisions are also consistent with the inherent authority of a Commander-in-Chief under the U. S. Constitution and the provisions of the War Powers Resolution. To date, I have supported the President’s decisions relating to the Iranian conflict because they were consistent with these authorities and the ultimate goal of protecting national security interests. 

At the same time, what sets America apart is not only our strength, but how we use it. Our nation has always conducted military operations for just causes and through just and moral means. This must continue in the future; otherwise we forfeit our legitimacy to lead the world. 

So, let me be clear: I do not support the destruction of a "whole civilization." That is not who we are, and it is not consistent with the principles that have long guided America. 

I have and will continue to support a strong national defense—one that is focused, disciplined, and firmly rooted in protecting the safety and security of the American people. But, how we protect the lives of the innocent is just as important as how we engage the enemy. 

America is great because America is good.

The President’s threat that “a whole civilization will die tonight” cannot be excused away as an attempt to gain leverage in negotiations with Iran.

This type of rhetoric is an affront to the ideals our nation has sought to uphold and promote around the world for nearly 250 years. It undermines our long-standing role as a global beacon of freedom and directly endangers Americans both abroad and at home.

The oppressive, terror-spreading regime of the Islamic Republic must be distinguished from the people and the civilization of Iran. Everyone involved—especially the President and Iran’s leaders—must de-escalate their unprecedented saber-rattling before it is too late.

Many legal observers were shocked when the court agreed to hear this case challenging Trump’s attempt to unilaterally limit the constitutional right to citizenship granted to nearly everyone born on U.S. soil. After all, several lower courts across the country all agreed that Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented parents or parents on temporary visas was a clear violation of the 14th Amendment (and federal immigration law, too). 

But I think it only highlights how political the Supreme Court has been under Roberts’ leadership. I suspect the justices will deliver a 9-0 decision — maybe even an unsigned per curiam — excoriating Trump’s hamfisted attempt to codify xenophobia. Even if one or two of the court’s ideological extremists, like Justice Clarence Thomas or Justice Samuel Alito, somehow conjure up a loophole from “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States,” the resounding victory will spur a flurry of media coverage touting the judiciary’s rebuke of the president, providing Roberts et. al. cover for all their other prostrations before Trump.

Today it appears to many former DOJ employees and officials that the cathedral of justice is being dismantled stone by stone. Prosecutors appear to no longer enjoy prosecutorial independence. Prosecutions at the federal district level against perceived political or personal enemies of the administration’s leadership are, in many cases, now directed by senior leaders at the Department or by subordinates at the White House. Further, we see the entire legal profession weakened by attacks on law firms. Politically motivated criticism of our judges, as well as threats to their families, threaten to undermine the independence of the courts. Recently, it was reported that leaders in the various 93 US offices were told to provide DOJ headquarters with examples of perceived judicial activism that would serve as the basis for referral to the House of Representatives for possible impeachment proceedings. There are growing complaints about executive branch defiance of court orders.

Some prosecutions now appear to be motivated not by justice—but by politics, intimidation, or retribution. Recent prosecutions of perceived political enemies of the current administration—including former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and six members of Congress, including Sen. Mark Kelly—have all failed to an embarrassing level. These failures damage morale at DOJ and lessen respect for the agency primarily responsible for protecting the rule of law and our freedoms.
