JRR Tolkien didn't like Dune because it was too cynical and Frank Herbert didn't like LOTR because it wasn't. I'm convinced neither of them finished each other's books because Frank Herbert would've learned that Frodo fails and the world basically ends after they succeed.

I don't like songs in books. I don't know what they're supposed to sound like and they never add to the story for me. But for every rule there is an exception. There is a scene in Snow Crash where shit is going not good and they're at a concert.

I was the poor kid. I remember the day my mom told me. We did get books at the book fair, though. It was important to my mom that we read. I imagine my grandparents helped too. I still have one of the Calvin and Hobbes books from there around here somewhere.
