Will Tiresias pass muster?
quote from the article: "William Wenthe, a poetry professor, didn’t mark his course as potentially controversial, though he told me that he was worried: He teaches T. S. Eliot’s The Wasteland, which includes a male character from Greek mythology who becomes a woman. Could a Texan politician object to that? Censorship infantilizes students, he said: 'They’re old enough to vote. They’re all old enough to fight and die for this country. And you’re treating them like babies.'"

I graduated from @utaustin.bsky.social. I once felt so much gratitude for that. Many native Texans are, like me, Mexican American. These changes to the state's public institutions are awful to see. As one quoted prof, an expert on the Soviet Union, puts it, it's vibes authoritarianism.
quote from the article: "The University of Texas at Austin, the flagship school of the UT system, announced last month that it was eliminating majors in Africana studies, Mexican American and Latino studies, women’s and gender studies, and race and migration studies. More than 100 courses have been flagged for removal from the core curriculum, primarily ones relating to slavery, race, gender, sexuality, and the environment. Consolidating majors isn’t necessarily nefarious, nor is rethinking a core curriculum (a central group of courses from which students must take a certain number to graduate). But these changes are happening, Lauren Gutterman, an American studies professor at UT, told me, 'entirely because of the political context.'”

The idea that people want AI oversight to happen "all of a sudden" ignores years of research, warnings, and policy efforts. The delay hasn’t been a lack of awareness; it’s been because of years of industry lobbying against regulation, political resistance, and inaction.

A little plug for Jane the Virgin, not on NYT's list at all (annoying but not surprising). It's rare to find a show that creative with genre and form and winkingly self-aware yet committed to its characters. One of the best shows of that era.

That many of these creators are either Gen Z or younger Millennials should not go unremarked; nor should the fact that the spaces in which these stories take place are spaces that were largely created by older generations. It’s an artistic trend that reflects our fractured reality:

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds hits all the right beats, can be fun, character-deep, or a mind-bender. Ep. 2 this season, "The Griffin Incident," was one of my favorites so far. Masterful and formally tight generic mashup, risky foray into horror. With a killer last shot (not this one below).

Seeing many critiques of this recent Chronicle piece this week. It fits into a genre I posted about yesterday of setting up a straw man ("go ahead and despise AI all you want"). The faculty I've worked have very nuanced concerns about AI and aren't "pretending AI does not exist" /1
Now is the time to think much more clearly about what we ask students to do and why. Simply dropping a prompt into an LLM and harvesting the results is not sufficient as either a beginning or an end to humanities work. The American Historical Association and Modern Language Association have started to articulate more detailed answers to these difficult questions, emphasizing AI literacy and the notion that “expertise must precede AI reliance.” But that leaves the hard work to each faculty member: translating their own specialized expertise into pedagogy and determining how to help students build up a foundational level of knowledge in their subject against this new background. Retreating to blue books and pretending AI does not exist is not the answer.

So go ahead and despise LLMs all you want — but recognize that your ability to catch what they get wrong is the very skill set you want to cultivate in your students. It is on you to help them build it.
