Botanic is a nice area to hang out: Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens, Jeggy Nettle pub, Empire Music Hall regularly has good nights on. And everyone should visit The Crown Liquor Saloon.

That is a very early-Noughties combo of topic and protagonist. Coincidentally, 2002 is probably about the last time I watched QT.

Yes - there is a small number of BBC things that I love (probably enough to justify the licence fee payment). But together they will be less than 0.01% of the Beeb's entire output.

Very good. I learned about the canalside utilities thing earlier this year and it pleased me too. The Canal River Trust guy said they get about 1/3 of their income from leasing buildings and infrastructure like this.

We're also seeing loads of green flies in our bit of South London. My hunch is the hot weather and lack of rain is suppressing the bird population that would eat them, and the gross stuff the flies eat isn't being washed away like it usually would.

I was also at the Oval last night. It was a brilliant match and performance from the team. Bouncing back from that poor start showed real strength of character. And the fielding was the best I've seen from them.

You're probably right about that being the approach, but is it really doomed to fail? My worry is that things like this succeed (or are at least commercially viable) and they further crowd out the interesting, diverse stuff.
