It's the year of our lord 2026, and every now and then, when I need to empty the trash on my Mac, I still go to the rightmost menus in the Finder as if the Special menu will still be there. Old habits absolutely refusing to die, exhibit 3,846...
A screenshot of an emulated Mac running System 6.0, which is basically what I started with on my family's Mac Plus back in the day.

Correction: three. There’s another across this parking lot. How do this many people have this little taste?

I’d give a lot to go even a day without having to see a Cybertruck. Alas, I must frequently spend time in Redmond, so I have days like today, where within one short drive, I saw five of them. Frickin’ techbros.

Yeah, this is one of the things where it’s like…East Coasters, this one’s your job. You’re there. There’s tons of you. So rally already, and maybe don’t expect somebody 2,500 miles away to, y’know, hand the feds their ID first to get on a plane.

Not out, just holstered and visible. This was actually in the cafeteria at my office; we had an ATM in the corner. So the rest of us were just milling around nearby. I can imagine anyone traveling around town to machines in various places, and various crowds, would want a little extra deterrence.

I have, but only cops and security in specific circumstances (like when I saw people restocking an ATM, and, I mean, I honestly don't blame them...)

My family did a trip once where we flew from Seattle to Charlotte, drove to Orlando to see relatives, then took a slower drive back up the coast to visit things along the way. Everyone thought we were crazy for the length of the drive. We were like, "We're from the western US. We're used to it."

I went to a reading/signing of The Amber Spyglass that was held in a church. 10/10 venue selection, no notes.

We also REALLY need to stop calling it the "millionaire tax." There's a vast gap between "people who have a million dollars total" and "people who make a million dollars in a year," and so people who aren't in the second category are still getting riled up about the tax hitting them. Which it won't.

Anyway: yes, there are ABSOLUTELY distinctions in every company out there between who gets to be a Real Employee (slash person) and who doesn’t, and the difference gets real stark sometimes.

There was really nothing quite like seeing that when they kicked me out the door, I’d be indistinguishable from a corpse. And then of course they did so not long after COVID lockdown started, so THAT was neat…

At one point while contracting in tech, I found the company’s attrition dictionary: a list of procedures for what to do when people left the company under different circumstances (retired, quit, fired, whatever). Contractors were on the same line item as dead people.

This just made me recall the first time I read the novel, back when I borrowed it from someone I was, of all things, babysitting for. He had a great library; I'd read in there after I put the kids to bed. Neuromancer was one that he let me take home. Then I realized you were going to be in town...

Yeah, I used to work on a fraud detection service that fits into the former category. Practically speaking, even if you wanted to (and trust me, you don't), there's no way you _could_ have humans manually review millions of credit card transactions to find the ones that don't fit the pattern...

Growing up near Seattle inevitably meant learning about the Oregon Trail during state history classes (and yes, we played this game. a lot). My seventh grade teacher had us make recruitment brochures to exhort settlers to go west. And then he took us to see Dances With Wolves...

I did a seasonal stint at Apple once (pre-iPhone. It's been a while), and they just gave us the shirts. I still have mine. The store manager gave me a hoodie once, too; they were meant for cold-weather stores, but we got a shipment anyway, so he just handed them out to whoever wanted one.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Fuck ChatGPT flyers. The future is broadsheets.
A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:
Forget ChatGPT Flyers
Say it with
Broadsheets
Unlimited fonts
Stretch them
Or cram a really long sentence into one line for no good reason
No whitespace
Mix capital and lowercase
Pointing hands
(They're called manicules!)
Don't be left behind
Broadsheets are the future

Stop telling women what to do. Stop telling us to do all of the work. Stop acting like you know more about our struggle than we do. Stand up for your fellow human being without any reward because that’s what we’re supposed to do. Ffs.

A man replied to this saying in earnest that women need to get organized and fight for our rights and men will follow. We did that. We do that. We mobilized the largest single day protest in global history on every continent and yet I have fewer rights than my mom did at my age.
