Unfortunately, heavier vehicles do create more tire-related noise. The noise comes from compression of air between the tire and the pavement. More compression = louder sound.

Generally I think these types of projects are doomed to fail, but there are parts of the Stevenson (from McKinley Park to the interchange with the Dan Ryan) where the viaduct is SO tall that the space underneath could probably be occupied somewhat pleasantly.

There’s just a lot of negative polarization around CTU, which I believe may bleed into their slate of candidates. Most voters aren’t going to do a whole lot of research on this.

Hard to know just how much the general electorate is paying attention to the Chicago school board race, but the allegations against Hilario Dominguez, coupled with the mayor’s unpopularity, have a real chance of tanking all the CTU-aligned candidates.

Education is tied to housing and property taxes because it is treated as a property right. If you buy a house in the right neighborhood, you are buying a good school. The idea that public education is actually for everyone threatens that property right. If everyone can go to a good school, then being zoned for a good school doesn't help your property values.

To get an advisory referendum on the ballot, the # of signatures you need must surpass 8% of the total # of votes in the last gubernatorial election for your geography (precinct(s), ward(s), citywide). To put a Q on the November ballot in my precinct, I'd have needed just *42* valid signatures.

In a lot of cases the shape of my hypothetical annexation is based on present-day suburban borders, which are convoluted as hell. Beyond that I added and subtracted census tracts till I got the right land area, while preferencing more developed areas.

The Astros having their season ended by the White Sox inspired me to remake my "Houston-sized Chicago" map. It's been 66 years since Chicago last grew by annexation. In an alternate reality where the city grew to match the physical size/shape of Houston (as shown) it'd have twice the population.
