I’ve been quiet lately: fieldwork on an uninhabited island, workshops with students, buying our dream house (and its forest), moving in 2 dogs + 2 kids, a baby due this winter… Not much time left for shitposting. The hardest part? Staying focused while limpets still occupy 99% of my brain.

I missed #MolluskMonday this week, so #FossilFriday is doing double duty with a small inoceramid. These bivalves could grow well over a meter across in the Cretaceous Interior Seaway, and it is generally suspected that they harbored some variety of sulfur metabolizing bacteria as chemosymbiotes. ⚒️🧪🦪

Limpets graze biofilm using their radula, a tongue like structure covered in tiny teeth, leaving specific markings on the rocks. Modelling works shows that these animals are close to the optimum when it comes to cover a surface by crawling, and without passing two time on the same spot 🦑🌊🌍🌿

Scaphopods were also widely used as ornaments by prehistoric people: with an opening on both ends of the shell, they are particularly convenient to hang on a thread. But since they’re underwater critters, they were usually digged from fossil beds (happened at least in France and N. America)

Careful with all the AMOC fuss. It's a mathematical construction, not a "conveyor belt". For now its decline is well below natural variability. And no "dramatic AMOC collapse" will save Europe from heatwaves. If anything, a weaker AMOC may even worsen these events.

Economy and ecology are the same word: oikos, the household. One runs it, one reads it. The tragedy of the commons is where the halves grind. Hardin said shared resources are doomed & competition is inherently unstable. A crowded Breton rock full of limpets proves him wrong twice👇 🌊🦑🌍
