I have the tiniest infinitesimal sliver of hope that the midterms will lift enough Democrats into power that there will start being some limits and accountability. I understand that three different things need to happen. That Dems gain power, that they set limits, and that they hold him accountable.

Auto transcription (I was curious, sharing for access. Agree this is fantastic.)
Screenshot of a transcript. It says: “Exactly right, but I want to say a couple things. One thing about cities that I found in this reporting: cities are very unfairly labeled as these problem centers by Donald Trump and others. And one thing is worth remembering: if you look at the population of well, all people in cities, particularly people who come to cities from elsewhere, but particularly homeless and other vulnerable people in cities, look at youth homeless. A pretty large chunk of those people who end up in cities were failed in some other parts of this country. Okay, in the fraction of youth homeless who are LGBTQ, whatever, pretty high. So there are a lot of families in this country who fail the first duty of family, which is to love your kids more than any other thing, and there's a lot of families in this country that look at some verse in some book, and their child's face, and choose theSecond screenshot says: “verse in the book over their child's face, and drive their children out of Nebraska or out of Florida or out of Idaho, and those kids come to San Francisco, and those kids come to New York, and those kids go to Chicago, and we have friends giving dinners with them. You live in L.A. You are surrounded by people who have those kind of stories, and so cities. Every time someone is sleeping on a subway bench in a city, the rest of America can sort of say, "Ah, look at these cities.” But we are holding a lot of your people who you fail to love and take care of.

Because the behavior of the parties is not symmetrical. If we genuinely brought back shaming of shitty, cruel, deceptive behavior, the shame would overwhelmingly fall on the right, and the whole elite political & media system has shown again & again that it values symmetry over decency.

Algorithms killed the spectrum of emotional valences. Everything now is set to 10. Bring back the eyeroll, the exasperated sigh, the hand wave, the shoulder shrug. Some stuff is just mildly annoying or blandly dumb. You don’t need to blow every emotional outburst on the mundane.

Yet another element is that a credible threat of cutting off contact - or having a period of cutting off contact - can be the catalyst for real change. Like, the relationship is better for BOTH parties after this.

I’ve been thinking about this more and an element may be how the internet gives losers the attention that fuels them in a way that wouldn’t happen without the internet. If say 3% of all men are this brand of awful, they are more likely to get drowned out in an IRL-only context.
