Auto transcription (I was curious, sharing for access. Agree this is fantastic.)
Screenshot of a transcript. It says: “Exactly right, but I want to say a couple things. One thing about cities that I found in this reporting: cities are very unfairly labeled as these problem centers by Donald Trump and others. And one thing is worth remembering: if you look at the population of well, all people in cities, particularly people who come to cities from elsewhere, but particularly homeless and other vulnerable people in cities, look at youth homeless. A pretty large chunk of those people who end up in cities were failed in some other parts of this country. Okay, in the fraction of youth homeless who are LGBTQ, whatever, pretty high. So there are a lot of families in this country who fail the first duty of family, which is to love your kids more than any other thing, and there's a lot of families in this country that look at some verse in some book, and their child's face, and choose theSecond screenshot says: “verse in the book over their child's face, and drive their children out of Nebraska or out of Florida or out of Idaho, and those kids come to San Francisco, and those kids come to New York, and those kids go to Chicago, and we have friends giving dinners with them. You live in L.A. You are surrounded by people who have those kind of stories, and so cities. Every time someone is sleeping on a subway bench in a city, the rest of America can sort of say, "Ah, look at these cities.” But we are holding a lot of your people who you fail to love and take care of.

When I was trying to figure out whether Lindsey Graham had already said he wouldn’t run for another term like Mitch McConnell had after LG’s death yesterday, AI helpfully told me that his death was just a fictional scenario.
Screenshot showing an AI Google response to my (misspelled) search for “Lindsey Graham won’t run for another term.” It says, “reports regarding Lindsey Graham not running for another term stem from a fictional scenario where he passes awag in 2026. This narrative, as detailed in reports from Politico, KCRA, PBS Newshour and The New York Times, outlines a situation where he would have been seeking a fifth term.” Then it starts to fade with “Under these hypothetical circumstances…” and then there’s nothing else visible.

I was curious about this too, found this. Pingree won the nomination. mainemorningstar.com/2026/03/16/h...
The Democratic primary field is now set with five prominent candidates: Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, businessman Angus King III, former Mills administration official and Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree, and Dr. Nirav Shah, who became a household name during the COVID-19 pandemic when he led the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. So far, several polls have shown Shah leading the pack though with a significant number of undecided voters.

I have kept a hope journal since November 15th, 2024 - a way to avoid doom spirals and stay energized. I wrote this in the back cover (first pic). I just started a new journal, and wrote this in the back cover (second pic).
Black somewhat reflective cover with "Joy in the dark is a candle - Saeed Jones" in gold marker, with a small drawing of a candle.Handwritten black ink on white saying, "I'm coming to understand that maintaining hope is radical - Saeed Jones."

Weather reports are not the only reason I follow you, but as someone who lives not far downstream of you, it's been useful more than once. (I did not know a storm was coming!)
Screenshot from Weather Underground radar showing a big storm approaching Columbus, Ohio where I am but much closer to where Scalzi is. There is enough deep orange/red to indicate it's got some oomph.

He was super mad when fellow giant (but not beautiful) Chet Holmgren won MVP in an under-19 championship they played against each other. And Wemby rendered Chet entirely irrelevant in this final, deciding NBA Western Conference Finals game.
Screenshot from a NYT article about the Spurs. It says: "He made a ghost out of Thunder big man Chet Holmgren, his longtime foe who is clearly terrified of this particular matchup and finished with the kind of line that will haunt him in the months, and possibly years, ahead: four points on 1-of-2 shooting, four rebounds, two blocks and two turnovers in nearly 33 minutes. There was no better indicator of how uniquely impactful Wembanyama is already proving to be, and this severe contrast of performances is sure to spark a conversation about how the Thunder might respond."

I came to a similar conclusion a couple of years ago and got this sticker - front and center as I work at my computer every day - to try to mush it into my brain. To be clear, the point is not that everything is actually peachy, but to try to operate from that starting point and look for the good.
A sticker that says “everything is always working out for me” against a rainbow background. It is on a light green computer with some desk items in the background.

Fairly random cite: sites.psu.edu/bilingualism...!
Screenshot of a quiz, with a graphic of a car being washed. Text is:

"5. After a long, brutal Pennsylvanian winter, you look at your car and realize how dirty it is. Which of the options below would you say?

 a. This car needs to be washed.
 b. This car needs washed.
 c. This car needs washing.

Click to learn more about your answer…
Of the three, options an and c are the ones that the majority of English speakers would say. But in many parts of the US, including parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Indiana, speakers commonly use phrases like needs washed in b as well. And like the other examples mentioned above, we know that this way of speaking is as rule-based and systematic as any other, so it doesn’t need corrected at all!"

I still haven't gotten a response on this one but I did just see a recommendation from Deaf Equity (Minnesota-based nonprofit) to get an app called ReadyNow. readynowapp.org
Screenshot which says:

Just downloaded ReadyNow, an app that helps you create an emergency plan in case of ICE detention. One button, three seconds, and your trusted contacts get your location and your plan. You can include childcare, work, and pet care. After the alert is sent, the app deletes your data from its server. This is about preparedness, safety, and community care. Please share with the DDBHH community.

IMPORTANT NOTE: go to the settings and make the font smaller to move forward with the next screen.

VD/transcript are in the comments.

screenshot of the victory speech transcript. "Turn the volume up" appears, and then the next section is highlighted in yellow:

"We will hold bad landlords to account because the Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants. We will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks. We will stand alongside unions and expand labor protections because we know, just as Donald Trump does, that when working people have ironclad rights, the bosses who seek to extort them become very small indeed.

New York will remain a city of immigrants: a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant.

So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: to get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us. When we enter City Hall in 58 days, expectations will be high. We will meet them."

I read this several hours ago now and I can't get it out of my head. We're talking about Tyler Robinson like he's the shooter and it's just technicalities from here. But what if he's not? "Implied"? The certified shitposter *implied* that he did this? www.nytimes.com/2025/09/13/u...
Screenshot with the word "implied" highlighted. The whole thing is: "The police said that Mr. Robinson had implied or confessed that he committed the crime, and that he was then encouraged by a family member and family friend to turn himself in, which he did. He surrendered to the police in Southwestern Utah, where he lived, more than a three hours’ drive from the campus where the shooting took place."

Did you know he had his own inflammatory tweet that (last I checked) was still up?
Screenshot of horrible tweet by Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno. It QT’s one from Corey A. DeAngelis that says, “a Minnesota lawmaker was shot and killed today. These flyers were in the suspect’s car. Randi Weinstein and the teachers unions promoted “No Kings Day” as a “nationwide day of defiance.” They need to call it off.” Then there’s a photo of the homemade “no kings” xeroxes from the MN shooter.

Bernie Moreno in his own tweet says:

“The degree to which the extreme left has become radical, violent, and intolerant is both stunning and terrifying.”

Well how's this for a gut-punch. I just re-read the Bradbury story "A Sound of Thunder." The horror of it is that feckless Eckels causes the monstrous Deutscher to win the presidency. Below is the "before" description of Deutscher. The horrible end is: "We got an iron man now, a man with guts!"
Screenshot of this text:

"Unbelievable." Eckels breathed, the light of the Machine on his thin face. "A real Time Machine." He shook his head. "Makes you think, If the election had gone badly yesterday, I might be here now running away from the results. Thank God Keith won. He'll make a fine President of the United States."

"Yes," said the man behind the desk. "We're lucky. If Deutscher had gotten in, we'd have the worst kind of dictatorship. There's an anti everything man for you, a militarist, antiChrist, antihuman, antiintellectual. People called us up, you know, joking but not joking. Said if Deutscher became President they wanted to go live in 1492. Of course it's not our business to conduct Escapes, but to form Safaris. Anyway, Keith's President now. All you got to worry about is-"

"Shooting my dinosaur," Eckels finished it for him.

Here's an email I received from them this morning. (I had asked them on the Facebook group on Monday, and the flyer here is the one I shared when I was asking about it.)
American flag background and a flyer that says "50 Protests, 50 states, 1 day. Your state capitol. We the People reject Project 20024." Then a pic of a capitol-esque building and the reddit logo with "R/50501"

Text of email:

50501 Protests Today
You have probably seen the posters about these marches, and some discussion wondering whether or not they are suspicious. To the best of our knowledge, these are protests put together in every state by individuals, not organizations. It seems sensible to be cautious, but also, this is the energy and action we need to fight Elon’s coup and the threat of Project 2025!

If you go, stay with a friend, be alert, and have your eye on an exit. It would be a good idea to check out these protest safety tips from Greenpeace. FYI there was a Newsweek article about the protests. It says the organizers have partnered with "Political Revolution, a group initially created to support Senator Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential bid."

Just seeing this! I do not own a cat, regretfully, but this is a pic I took of a cat I visit frequently! He is very sweet if not that bright.
A gray tabby with a white muzzle and white legs is photographed in portrait mode, so his face is in focus but the soft pink, brown and cream colors behind him are fuzzy. He is snuggled on a light turquoise bathrobe. He clearly knows his picture is being taken and is okay with this but slightly annoyed and isn't making eye contact, instead looking off to the side. He looks very soft (which he is!)

Yep. This too, from @roxanegay.bsky.social
Screenshot of an article by Roxane Gay. The text is: "Mr. Trump's voters are granted a level of care and coddling that defies credulity and that is afforded to no other voting bloc. Many of them believe the most ludicrous things: babies being aborted after birth and children going to school as one gender and returning home surgically altered as another gender even though these things simply do not happen. Time and again, we hear the wild lies these voters believe and we act as if they are sharing the same reality as ours, as if they are making informed decisions about legitimate issues. We act as if they get to dictate the terms of political engagement on a foundation of fevered mendacity.
We must refuse to participate in a mass delusion. We must refuse to accept that the ignorance on display is a congenital condition rather than a choice. All of us should refuse to pretend that any of this is normal and that these voters are just woefully
misunderstood and that if only the Democrats addressed their economic anxiety, they might vote differently. While they are numerous, that does not make them right."

Hey @hankgreen.bsky.social wanna save democracy? This seems up your alley. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
"The most ambitious plan to get Americans to show up in the same room and argue with one another in the nineteen-thirties came out of Des Moines, Iowa, from a one-eyed former bricklayer named John W. Studebaker, who had become the superintendent of the city’s schools. Studebaker, who after the Second World War helped create the G.I. Bill, had the idea of opening those schools up at night, so that citizens could hold debates. In 1933, with a grant from the Carnegie Corporation and support from the American Association for Adult Education, he started a five-year experiment in civic education.

The meetings began at a quarter to eight, with a fifteen-minute news update, followed by a forty-five-minute lecture, and thirty minutes of debate. The idea was that “the people of the community of every political affiliation, creed, and economic view have an opportunity to participate freely.” When Senator Guy Gillette, a Democrat from Iowa, talked about “Why I Support the New Deal,” Senator Lester Dickinson, a Republican from Iowa, talked about “Why I Oppose the New Deal.” Speakers defended Fascism. They attacked capitalism. They attacked Fascism. They defended capitalism. Within the first nine months of the program, thirteen thousand of Des Moines’s seventy-six thousand adults had attended a forum. The program got so popular that in 1934 F.D.R. appointed Studebaker the U.S. Commissioner of Education and, with the eventual help of Eleanor Roosevelt, the program became a part of the New Deal, and received federal funding. The federal forum program started out in ten test sites—from Orange County, California, to Sedgwick County, Kansas, and Pulaski County, Arkansas. It came to include almost five hundred forums in forty-three states and involved two and a half million Americans. Even people who had steadfastly predicted the demise of democracy participated. “It seems to me the only method by which we are going to achieve democracy in the United States,” Du Bois wrote, in 1937."Another screenshot from the same article. The text is: "The federal government paid for it, but everything else fell under local control, and ordinary people made it work, by showing up and participating. Usually, school districts found the speakers and decided on the topics after collecting ballots from the community. In some parts of the country, even in rural areas, meetings were held four and five times a week. They started in schools and spread to Y.M.C.A.s and Y.W.C.A.s, labor halls, libraries, settlement houses, and businesses, during lunch hours. Many of the meetings were broadcast by radio. People who went to those meetings debated all sorts of things:

Should the Power of the Supreme Court Be Altered?

Do Company Unions Help Labor?

Do Machines Oust Men?

Must the West Get Out of the East?

Can We Conquer Poverty?

Should Capital Punishment Be Abolished?

Is Propaganda a Menace?

Do We Need a New Constitution?

Should Women Work?

Is America a Good Neighbor?

Can It Happen Here?"
