I also loved the part where Howie talks about how Bob Murphy made you feel good about the team regardless of the standings: “Maybe it wasn't good tonight, but man, there's a chance it's going to be great tomorrow.” Really sums up being a Mets fan for me. Eternally hopeful.

I truly appreciate @nhannahjones.bsky.social being so honest and open about the struggle parents go through - even a city as diverse as ours is not shielded from the deep roots of white supremacy. The only choices cannot be falling behind or leaving others behind. Kids deserve so much more.

But the thing is...I flourished. I had great teachers and a great experience. My mother, like so many others, took a huge risk to get me the education she thought I deserved. No parent should have to make that choice, and no other kid should be disadvantaged because theirs didn't.

Why did I have to go so far every day? Why couldn't I go to school with the kids around my way? Why did I have to lie to adults, at such a young age, about my real home address? My school was still majority non-white, but it didn't look like the place I actually lived, only one district over.

I grew up in a majority Black neighborhood in Queens. My mother used our aunt's address to enroll us in a public school in a different district. I walked almost a mile to school both ways when there was one just a few blocks from our house, and it took me a long time to understand why...
