Sorry for whatever this was. But to be crystal clear – this thread is about how I am healing from a life of violence and hurt and suffering. Not about a fucking youtuber.

Sorry. Things have been rough for me for the last little while. And all of this discussion has made me think a lot. And at the end of it all, on reflection, my response to getting very hurt is not to get angry or put my defences up. Not to withdraw. It seems it's to love even harder.

I don't think I am naive. I just don't think I can rewire the fundamentals of who I am. And what has always driven me. Even if it has made me incredibly vulnerable. And always will.

I have often been "too" loving and honest in my life, towards people who have exploited that and hurt me. But I hope I never change. I think I would rather be crushed by the cruelty of the world than become someone who loves less freely. Who does not truly long, in my heart, for love for all.

The people who have hurt me most in the world. Who have caused me vicious, immeasurable harm. I desire no revenge or comeuppance. I simply wish they were better people, who would no longer cause that harm to others. And that this grants them all the peace and love and happiness in the world.

I think I just fundamentally believe people are what they do. There is no inherently good or bad person, born or made. Our actions do not leave moral stains on our souls. We must have the agency to stop causing harm. To repair what we can. And to be better people. And I want that for everyone.

If you weaponise any of the above to go to bat for a specific youtuber. That's not what I meant and you know it's not. Fuck you forever.

I don't even wish that on my rapist. I want him to become a better person and be able to live a better, normal life. Whatever that looks like.

Not saying that means you should be a public figure and not disclose serious harm in your past – but I have been people say things to the effect that you should have to disclose every harm you have ever done to each customer you make coffee for in Starbucks.

My one contribution to this discourse is that the idea that if you have ever done anything harmful you should have to disclose it to literally everyone you ever interact with or work with simply must and cannot be true. That's not even carceral. It's medieval, like branding someone's forehead.

It's another really fun time to be a rape and sexual assault survivor on the internet.

Legal 500 have responded...
A spokesperson for Legal 500 said: 'During a recent website update, an error in the upload process resulted in a small amount of testimonial information being published incorrectly. As soon as we became aware of the issue, we removed the content from our website and began additional verification checks.

'We recognise the importance of ensuring that the information we publish is accurate and take this matter extremely seriously. We apologise to our customers for any concern or inconvenience caused and are taking immediate steps to strengthen our quality assurance processes and safeguards to prevent a recurrence.

It's really quite something isn't it. At least it's given everyone something fun to talk about on WhatsApp this morning!

Not a defamation lawyer, but my understanding is that, potentially, yes.

Lawyers ask their clients to write reviews of them for Legal 500. Legal 500 usually curate these into positive reviews of members of the profession. It seems this time that a lot of the more negative comments from clients have ended up being published...

I don't fancy joining Legal 500 in the defamation suits to follow by republishing some of this stuff haha

Jess O'Thomson @jessothomson.co.uk · 10h
Some of the screenshots I have seen are just... wow. I expect they will be getting at least some defamation actions threatened against them.

So, Legal 500 has seemingly accidentally published a bunch of highly disparaging comments about members of the legal profession in their reviews this year, and now this is the state of the website.
Legal500 Down for maintenance

Makes me really sad that the sectarian hatred of the Orange Order has made Protestants feel the need to speak out in this way. These bigots should not be able to paint themselves as representatives of whole communities.

If anyone is in touch with any of the local trans inclusive safe spaces orgs around the country can you reach out to them and ask if they would be willing to speak to me over the next day or so please. I have opened my DMs.

Just wanted to say I have been listening to the audiobook on the Anglo Saxons during my commute and you are a wonderfully engaging writer whilst retaining a delightful level of academic nuance and detail. Look forward to reading this, too!

Reminds me of GCs over here who wish to treat a single court ruling as definitive of absolute moral victory with which everyone else must now comply

Think mass harassment by idiot football fans and targeting by serious criminals involve different types of risk and are probably addressed by different types of mitigations.

Tbh it was a good speech and I would really like to be able to back the man, I just need him to have a decent position on our human rights obligations. Which is also a necessary component of any future relationship with the EU.

Am still of the view that changing the electoral system specifically without a mandate via manifesto/referendum is super constitutionally sketchy, especially given AV ref result – but yes certainly there are other big things they could do which aren't in manifesto.

Jess O'Thomson @jessothomson.co.uk · 29/09/2026
That's true of some things but not loads of massive policies. You don't really have time/capacity to use the Parliament Acts for a whole bunch of stuff.

I don't think the options are free or just like a private pension scheme. Just think as someone who has personally had to pay a couple hundred quid out of pocket more than once to make sure I qualify, you can see why I think "free" isn't wholly accurate.
110
Jess O'Thomson @jessothomson.co.uk · 29/09/2026
It's free at the point of use, like the NHS, but it's conditional on contributions or credits, and a large part of the purpose of NI is in fact to pay for it. Just not your own individual pot. When my earnings have been short of NI I have paid the additional NI contribution to have a qual year.

Yeah I agree on the early election thing but would probs also be silly to have winter election. They might wait to see how mood is for one next spring. Have already said I would announce a bunch of very spendy policies at budget to increase popularity.

Ps – one reason why things often need to be in the manifesto is so you can rely on the Salisbury Convention to push them through the House of Lords.
