Never been to the opera before? Now’s your chance. We’re giving away 70,000 free tickets to the @metopera at the iconic Lincoln Center. Go to on.nyc.gov/opera to enter the lottery. There’s not a bad seat in the house.

He argues that technology can enable but cannot determine what society does with AI: 'that's for the arts and humanities and social sciences...[to do] shaping that and guiding...humanity into the next era'. Quite different from arts, humanities and social sciences being inherently less valuable.

Been looking through the syllabi for the courses I took and TAed for in college and grad school, and goddamn, so much good teaching happened in the age of reading and writing when profs had the freedom to make a killer reading list and just see where things went from there

Thing I said in a workshop to students today: Developing a coping skill is not the same thing as “building character”, “building resilience,” or developing sustainable professional practices. Some acting and dance teachers need to hear me say that, too.

The idea that classrooms are chiefly spaces for product testing, and that it is irresponsible pedagogy not to enforce this, is both cynical and vile, and “fuck off” is a cogent response from any professional educator to any non-teaching salescreep or tech-but-not-subject-matter expert who voices it.

Class discussion on Student-centered v. Teacher-centered v. Subject-centered (Palmer) pedagogies today. A student says: You know that song Another Brick in the Wall? By Pink Floyd? Teacher-centered reminds me of that. They're going to be okay.

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

Maybe this is obvious, but if I was (which I wouldn't be) a faculty member who voted to cap A grades, the only reason I'd tell on myself so hard would be because I'd want institutional policy to substantiate my desire to be a hard-ass: kneecapping the students for my own self-aggrandizement.
