Welp, confirmation from a market that gen AI art is used when there are "no other options." No other options?? SEriOSLy? 🤔 Let's start a thread of where you can find art to use in the public domain because I'm sick of this shit! Please reply below with your favorite resources. 👇

I really want to write a second book about the COVID pandemic from a Black epidemiologist perspective but my family and friends have begged me not to out of fear of my safety. And it’s incredible that even has to be taken into consideration b/c of insane conspiracy theorists.

I'm one of the "and more!" authors in September! I know there are SO many books that are competing for your money and your eyes (or ears) this month, so I'm sorry to keep bugging you about mine, but if you like movies and horror (and maybe a little bit of romance), you can preorder mine!

Tim Curry and Dolly Parton have taught us not only that you should be bigger, weirder, gayer, and freakier, but also that those qualities are what people will love about you. The things that make you strange and amazing are the things that will resonate with other strange and amazing people

Introduce yourself as what almost killed you. Hi, I'm ureteroceles (sounds like a Greek character) and poison backing up through my system at under age 1, and being on antibiotics for the first 2 years of my life... (People sometimes ask "What would you be in medieval times?" Dead. I'd be dead)

To close, I'm disturbed by the federal government's trend toward a more "tough on crime" agenda. "Tough on crime" policies help nobody: not the victims, not our communities, not criminalized people and their potential for rehabilitation, and not even the economy - incarceration is expensive.

Jessica Peter @jessicapeter.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
As a reminder, this case moved exactly as they wanted: the person was incarcerated for 25 years before a parole hearing. He did not get parole. We already have solutions to the issues raised, for example Federal Ombudsperson for Victims of Crime. There is no need for these proposed changes

Jessica Peter @jessicapeter.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
It's odd that "mandatory life imprisonment" gets bolded and underlined, while "with no eligibility for parole for 25 years" ends up de-emphasized. With this paragraph, are they calling for an end to all opportunities for parole hearings for anyone with life sentence?
Passage reading: Mr. Gayle was sentenced to life in prison. He had been denied parole twice, on June 27, 2019 and, October 29, 2024. There is no “two-thirds” of a life sentence. As discussed below, the political compromise reached in 1976 (July 14, 1976 to be precise), was that in exchange for abolishing the death penalty, offenders convicted of first-degree murder would be sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment with no eligibility for parole for 25 years. The compromise confirmed that life imprisonment meant life imprisonment. As the Supreme Court of Canada held in R. v. Bissonnette “Parole is a statutory privilege and not a right” (emphasis added).

They spend some time talking of the need for more timely notification of victims - fine. Then the letter turns into something much more insidious, that puts the Canadian values of a fair justice system focused on reintegration and public safety to question

Jessica Peter @jessicapeter.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
The Toronto & Canadian Police Associations are lobbying the federal government. They begin the letter with a detailed explanation of the crime that spurred the lobby - a man killed a police officer in 1994. He has been up for parole 4 times. He has NOT gotten parole.

Today is Prisoners' Justice Day. Across Canada, and now internationally, people in custody take part in hunger strikes and other protests to remember those who died while incarcerated. People outside join vigils and protests in solidarity. This PJD comes with problematic calls for parole reform

Today as I was weeding, I accidentally knocked a beautiful cicada out of the bush, and it skedaddled away on foot. About 5 minutes later I heard a lot of cicada noise from the trees, and I hoped it was “my” cicada with its friends

So apparently that HWA pro-AI newsletter also uses Indigenous water rights issues as a prop, trivializing the activism by Indigenous peoples to protect our water including specific anti-data centre actions. I guess they figured why not alienate Indigenous horror writers while they’re at it?
“Sure. Sure.

Yes, we know AI is using up resources. So does driving a car or a planes so does building a new home. So do a lot of things. Humans have always used up Earth’s resources and usually not nicely. There are reservations and other Indigenous communities in Canada that have never had clean water and have been ravaged by pipeline construction. But somehow that’s been okay for the past fifty or a hundred years, and very few people scream about that. But suddenly, AI is the enemy, not everything else we’ve been doing all along. Suddenly YOUR water might not be clean, so it’s a Big Deal”.

I sympathize but also... it's very different here! I work at a university but not on the main campus, but I'm doing a PhD - and I found out the hard way that students aren't allowed to have ANY long-term parking on campus. The only lot for students is a shuttle bus away

Now do I think they’re about to win the seat of prime minister next election? Likely not - it’s more about rebuilding the party (which I think they all well know)… but a relatively major party continuing to talk about anti-capitalism can’t hurt!
